View Full Version : POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO DAY PART 22-- THE ORIGINAL CHALLENGE

saravrose
3rd of August 2006 (Thu), 11:18
Good morning folks... thanks to Paul we have a theme idea.. Or rather are repeating the original idea.. this was done by CDI-INC and I about five and a half months ago and was the beginning of the weekly challenges.. It was a bit of a composition scavenger hunt but was a good exercise.. Ofcourse now it's not nearly as cold as it was then, and we can take our photos during the daytime.. Here's the list.

Take a photo of a road
Take a photo of a fast food joint
Take a photo inside a convenience store
Take a photo of the name of your town
Take a photo of a store window..

I'm giggling cause I thought these up on the spur of the moment.. But, for entertainments purposes this could be a lot of fun.. Lets try to keep the photos a little smaller than we would normally.. and it isn't necessary to take all of the shots on the list but, i'd like it if you would..

Photos can be taken from sunrise on friday morning to sunset on sunday evening and should be posted by monday... All interpretations are welcome and I can't wait to see what we come up with...

the original thread for anyone that would like to see what the original challenge was like..

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=144322

Have fun and happy shooting..

Love 'em all ... I likee simple shots that tell a simple story :-) I have to face my corner shop guy today too. I can choose either the Sikh guy and his three big helpers in one shop or the Muslim guy and wife in another. Don't think either will be pleased  Both have security camera's too. Hmmm, I need a plan to get the shot I am thinking of.

What's the big deal about shooting in a conveniencd store? Are the owners more paranoid than other stores?

Great shots Sari and Dave,

A question for each of you:

Dave: What's that cool looking "olde" building in the background behind the takeaway? And, is Tesco taking over the world?

Sari: What's a Quinceanera? (Sounds like a dish at a Mexican takeaway.)

quinceanera in the Mexican culture is a way for Mexican families to introduce their daughters into society.. It happens on their fifteenth birthday and is similar to the old debutante' coming out parties.. The party itself is very similar to a wedding minus the groom.. The girl has attendants and a lot of attention bestowed on her.. My bestfriend in highschool had the choice between a quinceanera or a trip to NYC (they costed the same)... and she took the trip to NY. I did have one friend who had a quinceanera and it was a great time... lots of music and food and dancing... I was walking past the banquet hall and she was standing next to the door waiting for her big introduction.. I peeked my head in the door and asked If I could take her picture.... I do think there's some kind of religious aspect to it but i'm not familiar with what that would be..

This was the first time I've done this challenge. What Fun! My wife, of course spend much of the time rolling her eyes, but she enjoyed the execise. I really enjoyed this, and it kind of gave me a way of getting out there and getting some pictures that I otherwise might not consider.

(edit) I have to add. I didn't get run out of the convenience store. We did buy a couple slushies, So, maybe because we were paying customers.... who knows!

thanks for joining in.. It is a lot of fun.. I think a lot of us get shots that we wouldn't get just be the exercises of looking for a composition that you wouldn't normally think about... Feel free to join in and if you have any ideas for themes or suggestions feel free to speak up!..:D :D

Great shots, guys :)
It's so interesting to see the little differences (cue the Pulp Fiction soundtrack).

After pushing for a theme last week and then not contributing ... (I blame a very close Australia vs New Zealand rugby game that I travelled to Brisbane to watch, and then a couple too many rums afterwards to drown my sorrows. We were robbed, I tells ya!) ... I figured I'd better make an appearance this week. What a fun theme, too :)

This was the first time I've picked up my camera in a few weeks. I must change that.

My road. That's my hacienda on the left.
http://www.psychogoat.com/linked/20060806_0175_w640_1.jpg

Fast food joint. The best Pizza in Kingaroy, though I have to admit they don't have a whole lot of competition. This is in our main street. As you can see, it's all happening in Kingaroy on a Sunday afternoon.
http://www.psychogoat.com/linked/20060806_0169_w640_1.jpg

Inside a convenience store (a service station). I live in the country ... no need to snap and run out here. This very helpful lady was even happy to pose for me, though I think her smile does look a little strained.
http://www.psychogoat.com/linked/20060806_0159_w640_1.jpg

The name of my town
http://www.psychogoat.com/linked/20060806_0152_w640_1.jpg

A store window. Yep, this photo somewhat sums up Kingaroy to me.
There was a huge stir when this place opened up, and I think the established locals still aren't too happy.
I thought about going inside for a stickybeak, but then noticed it was closed. Damn :) Bit worried I might have run into someone from work, anyway, to be honest :o

Thanks Sari :)

Heh, yeah, the impression I get is that those kinds of "shops" usually are "over the train tracks" ... not that I would really know of course ;)

This one in Kingaroy however is actually in our main street ... in fact it's in the same block as the pizza shop shown above, and on the same side of the street - just past that "Fabrics" sign further down the block - a very public spot.

   .. I wasn't being smart those shops really are over the train tracks where I live.. the town is seperated into two sides, North and South I live on the South side where all the public buildings, schools stores etc.. are.. the North side literally seperated by one of the largest train yards in the Northwest is where all the bars, pawn shops, tattoo parlors and ummm.. the 'intimate' shops are at... It's not really that bad it's just the 'other' part of town...

Mat Fitzsimmons
6th of August 2006 (Sun), 04:05
Hehe, yeah, I know what you mean ... those kinds of establishments do seem to group together, often on the outskirts of town, or at least (as with your description) away from the main business areas. It's a really nice metaphor that it's the other side of the tracks, and it literally is on the other side of the tracks :D

Sorry, I wasn't implying you were being smart, I just got a bit excited with my quotation marks :)

Hey Mat,

Great shots! The 17-40mm pictures looks so different on the new 5D don't they? You can actually see the edge distortion that's missing when it's mounted on the 20D. It doesn't detract from the picture though. They're real sharp.

I'm glad to see a happy smiling face behind the shop counters up there. The Pakistani guy here was angry the minute I brought a camera into his shop...I think he might have been sued over a public liability claim, and thought I was a lawyer or something. So, it looks like I'm "Persona Non Grata" at my local convenience store. (Lucky there's 367 more in Brisbane hey?)

Mat Fitzsimmons
6th of August 2006 (Sun), 07:44
G'day Paul :)

Yeah, it does go nice and wide on the 5D. Much the same as a 10-22 on a 20D I guess. Only the road shot was taken with the 17-40 though, the rest were with the 24-70.

Hehe, no angry storekeepers up here - or none that I've found, anyway! The lady at the servo was a bit unsure, but didn't seem to really mind. I had a bit of a limited selection - there aren't that many places open on a Sunday here.

Cheers!
Mat.

Ok time for my shots. They are not as great as everybody elses but here they are.

First a two in one.

A road and the town name in one.

http://photo.klein-jensen.dk/photo2.php?n=060805_road_townname.jpg

Going into convenience store to photograph isn't really something that is common here and I would probably get thrown out and I didn't feel like running in the heat today. So a shot through the door should do it.

A fastfood joint setup just for todays cycling race.

And finally a store window. Not the most interesting one but the name was kinda interesting ;)

Seems that 'Sari sari' is Tagalog for 'various kinds', ie the stuff you'd find in the 'convenience stores' that can be found on any Philippino street. Alternatively, it could be what her Uncles shout when they can't find her because she's gone off on another of her adventures

The name of my town. Also taken out the windshield!

B. Many of our contributors live in towns featured in books...e.g.

#3 INSIDE A STORE WINDOW. I actually had a great shot lined up, but as I was walking to it, I saw this, and couldn't resist. This is an art store...and one of it's residents. :)

#4 INSIDE A CONVENIENCE STORE Every convenience store in a Tourist Trap has fun and interesting things in it. This was nestled back behind the old fashioned candy. I thought it was definitely worth sharing. :)

And #5 CITY NAME. Too tired to go out again after getting home. How about the phone book? :)

these first shots are my sons, he thought this was a blast.

Out of the eyes of babes, these are great, and have to agree with his interpretation of convinience. Certainly hope he continues to be encouraged to take pictures by this challenge and other forums.

thanks Becky, he really seems to enjoy it. Whenever I shoot events and he is with me I always give him 'his' camera (my old G3) and let him do as he likes, sometimes he takes fantastic shots!! this weekend every time we would pass a gas station or a fast food place he would practically scream for me to stop so he could take a picture, lol. this thread in particular seems to have sparked his interest.

I'm thrilled with that.. My seven year old niece loves POTN.. and has shot for a challenge or two...

Paul- I did not know that.... I guess my uncles and cousin's fishing habit makes more sense now.. We do have the fish hatchery and the ponds in Nampa and ofcourse Lake Lowell and the Snake so I suppose there is a lot of fishing to be had in Nampa...

OK, this is my first attempt at this challenge. So be gentile....LOL

The first is my "road" picture...it is actually two roads in one. One road leads on the the State Ferry Columbia of the Alaska Marine Highway and the ferry is techicnally a road since it is the only way to get between islands with your car here and it is funded by the federal highway department.
http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/86327710-L.jpg

The next one is the "sign with the town name" on it...I was head of the annual salmon derby here for a few years and one year we paid for this sign with the commitees eanings...
http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/86471868-L.jpg

This next one is the "fast food joint" a local favorite on mine. It is where we have our monthly running club board beetings at 6 am.
http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/86472313-L.jpg

This one is of the "store window", a local art gallery...
http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/86472786-L.jpg

The last one (the convenience store) I took at 5:40pm today on my way to help serve the food at the banquette that was held in honor of the people who swam arond Pennock Island today, 8 miles around as a fund raiser for The American Diabetes Assoc.........

Not sure. Maybe because it was the original challenge. Maybe we should repeat this in 6 months time or so. Also it could be fun to try this one in africa.

I was thinking the same thing! :)

I think the reason I had so much fun with it was that it wasn't hard to think of something that "fit" the topic... it was all spelled out and it was like a scavenger hunt. I had a lot of fun with it.

I planned on commenting on all the shots but there are just too many. I was thankful to be able to get some shots in as I had a couple of birthday parties and dinners to attend this weekend and we had some bad weather. Luckily I took the camera with me to one of the dinners and snagged some shots.

We had so much fun with this one, what do you think of another "scavenger hunt" shoot? Like, inside a library, your normal mode of transportation, an animal you see most days, a sidewalk, a unique sign, etc etc? Somebody had posted a link to a site that proposes ideas for a photo scavenger hunt ( http://www.sh1ft.org/26things/ ) where we could get some inspiration.

What do you think?

The scavenger hunts are fun, but they do stifle creativity a bit because they are so specific. What about something like, "A Photo From Your Town With the Camera Pointing Upwards" or "A Photo From Under/Top of a Bridge" or a "Photo of a Bridge Using an Unusual Perspective" or "A Park Photo From a Dog's-Eye View"?

Lots of ways to interprete 'bridge' ...

Meaty0
10th of August 2006 (Thu), 02:25
Definitions for the word bridge;

# a structure that allows people or vehicles to cross an obstacle such as a river or canal or railway etc.
# a circuit consisting of two branches (4 arms arranged in a diamond configuration) across which a meter is connected
# something resembling a bridge in form or function; "his letters provided a bridge across the centuries"
# the hard ridge that forms the upper part of the nose; "her glasses left marks on the bridge of her nose"
# any of various card games based on whist for four players
# a wooden support that holds the strings up
# a denture anchored to teeth on either side of missing teeth
# connect or reduce the distance between
# the link between two lenses; rests on nose
# make a bridge across; "bridge a river"
# an upper deck where a ship is steered and the captain stands
# cross over on a bridge

I was there a while back...they had a used 100-400 L IS...the guy must have thought I was an idiot...he offered to deal with me for my 24-70 L and 1000 bucks. I declined. But they are certainly way better than Wolf. And some of their stuff isn't priced all that bad once you figure in shipping expenses from B&H or Adorama.
