I have been hired (edit I now work for this magazine full time) by my first magazine, Frisco Style Magazine. What a tough first assignment....shoot Miss Texas @ SouthFork Ranch!

What a beautiful young lady and an incredible singer. She also performed at the Collin County Community College as part of her elementary school foundation.

I hope you like the shots. The shooting conditions were very difficult at SouthFork. I was a tag along and tried to stay out of the way as they were shooting video for the upcoming Miss America Pageant to be broadcast on CMT this winter.

Here is a little about her;

Shilah Phillips is the first African-American to hold the Miss Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Texas) title. At 24, she won the pageant on her first attempt.

Education

Upon high school graduation from Collin County Community College, Phillips began studying jazz music at Howard University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_University) in Washington, D.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington%2C_D.C.) and, while there, received the Most Outstanding Vocalist award. She is currently enrolled at the University of North Texas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_North_Texas) to complete her degree in Jazz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jazz) studies.
Now a full-time student, Phillips supports herself with two jobs, both of which are directly related to her platform. Phillips works for the After School Programs, and is employed by Absolute Entertainment where she has the opportunity to perform professionally around the Dallas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas%2C_Texas)/Fort Worth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Worth%2C_Texas) area.

#1 My favorite - I was a big fan of "Dallas"

Nice images, but the lady looks a bit 'over processed' ;) Pity, I think she'd look better with less make up.

Good selection of poses, technically good, good looking woman, so I guess you got the three "G"s!

ok....the three G's?

I really struggled yesterday on two shoots.

First with her the sun was so bright there was just no chance of getting it right. I think the contrast of her dark skin and the bright sun was just tough.

I really really struggle with flash...I've got to do some more practicing.

I think the reason the makeup was strong was because of the film crew that was there.

Surprisingly though in person the makeup does not look as strong.

Just thought I'd share a Little excitement with you guys.

Since I started this thread a few hours ago, I've met with the magazine. They made me an offer I could not refuse. I am now on the staff full time as a photographer and an account executive. I had quit my regular job earlier this week and had planned on taking another ho hum, yet lucrative position in corporate America.

I was shocked when they met the number I had to have!

There was "0" processing on her skin or make up in photoshop. I think some of it was the lighting. It was very windy and really hot outside, probably about 94 or 95 when these were shot.

The only real post on these was in the first shot the background had a bunch of spider webs that I had to remove and the sky was blown out.

First image looks too grainy, plus too much of make-up :(

I was referring to the 'pre processing' the make up artist did ;)
Like you say, probabely has to do with the filming.

Congratulations!

Just thought I'd add a note the Shilah was first runner up the other night in the Miss USA contest. This was my first shoot for the current magazine I'm with, I'm glad to say I think I've gotten better and so has she.

Funny. I would say the photos look overprocessed, but in a stylish way that makes them look almost 60's look or life magazine like.

The real "funny" thing is there was almost no processing done other than adjusting white balance and USM. Most of what you see is "TV" make up as during the shoot she was shooting her video for CMT. This is why here makeup was so heavy that day.

looking at them especialyl the first one the first thing that pops out to me in the grain, maybe a little too much USM?

Besides that nice set.

Congrats on the new job, that is awesome!

Yes she does, I just wish I'd not been nervous and took more control during the shoot.

At least I did get an up close and personal look!

that would be funny as to me, there clearly is a "stylized" difference between these shots and your other shots, like I've the Rockettes. I would honestly be surprised if you don't see quite a different "look" on these versus your other work.

<#1 My favorite - I was a big fan of "Dallas">

umm...if's she's 24 now, "Dallas" ended in 1991...how many 8 year olds (and younger) list a show like dallas as their favorite?

LOL, I'm sure we could have gotten a press pass. The problem is the Miss USA Pageant is just not as big a deal as it use to be. It is not something that we would cover as we focus more on the local stuff as it happens in the local area.

Thanks...I've been at the job since August and I love it.

That's quite an honor... you earned it the hard way. No one can deny you that accomplishment...

And to think that you put Shilah on the front page of your magazine too...that certainly is a boost for her morale and image...and you get the credit for it...Congrats.
