Same question here.... In the local market i can only find the original Canon and they sell for 211€ ($269,93 US).... verry verry expensive in my opinion.... and ordering from the US is a pain... (i would have to pay the collar + 21% local VAT + 28% local import tax + local transport tax that is around $10 or $15 US)....

Any help is verry apreciated.

P.S.: Photogurt10: hope you don't mind me taging along in you're thread...

The cheapest collar I have seen is around $85. Which is the black one.

Or pay a bit more for the white one.

Or just buy the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 and use the collar that comes with this lens on both! hehe.

The 100-400 uses the tripod mount ring B. I think the 70-200 f/4 uses the A ring.

I don't mind at all...

That's a ridiculous amount to pay for a collar

Got mine (Ring A) in white on eBay for $85. It took a lot of patience and searching, but is well worth it as I do the bulk of my work with benefit of a tripod. The switch from landscape to portrait and back again is a pleasure.

Tkz for you're quick reply's.

I think i will keep on searching Ebay for the moment...

Photogurl10: in average, photo material is 1.5 to 2x more expensive in here then the prices i find in US sites. And the problem with buying from the US is the import taxes. We even have a "funny" situation in here... in Portugal (continental) we pay 21% VAT for everything, in Portugal (the islands, Madeira and Açores) they pay 19% VAT for everything. Interesting country dont you think?!? 2 diferent VAT taxes inside the same country and for the exactly the same things... You "walk" a couple of steps to the left, go to Spain, and the VAT there is 17%.

do most people feel that the collar is not necessary on the f4 200? I have shot without it and I'm not sure that I need it with this lens. Not for $100 anyway.

I guess its more a matter of choice as the lens isn't overly heavy but as I've stated in the past its worth it to me on a ball type tripod head or a monopod. Better balanced than mounting the plate to the camera body.

Not for $100 anyway.I wouldn't use a lens that large without a tripod collar. Admittedly it isn't as heavy as my 70-200 f/2.8 IS, but I agree with the statements above that it is far better to support a camera/lens at the balance point if it is practical.

It is also far superior to use a tripod collar if you want to switch between "landscape" and "portrait" orientation (horizontal or vertical picture orientation) on a tripod rather than flopping the whole camera/lens to one side for the "portrait" orientation.
