I bought a BH-40 ball head this week from RRS and, although it seems to work fine, the locking T handle feels much looser that I expected. I realize that it is spring loaded and can be repositioned at different points, but my question to other BH-40 users is should the T handle feel tight or is this normal ?

I would just call RRS and ask them. They are supposed to have excellent support.

I will, it was after office hours when I finally had time to play and it was bugging me.

Let me know how you like it. It's on my short list of hiking ballheads.

RRS implies it's normal but I'm still not convinced, going to try it next week in Yosemite and then decide whether to have it looked at. It has one other small issue, I bought it with the quick release lever plate from the BH55 that has the sprit level, they have this as an option for an extra $15, when mounted to the tripod and tilted into forward facing notch it just touches the tripod platform and therefore cannot pan. I have it on Gitzo 1258 legs.

Will this do, needs a spacer between head and mount. Only a problem when shooting straight down.

Think they state that it will hit if the tripod base is too large.

I am guessing you don't use an L-Bracket?

It would be a moot point if you had one.

L-Bracket FTW!

Seriously though, if you plan on taking a fair amount of photos in portrait definitely consider getting an L-Bracket. I find mine indispensable.
