I was going to buy a replacement (second battery), but not made by Canon, from Battery Barn, but I'm told that Canon and others won't honor a warranty if other batteries are used. Is there reason to seriously worry about this, and shell out for the expensive Canon battery?

It is my understanding (at least in the US) that Canon can not void a warranty, just because you used a third party battery. That said if the 3rd party battery is the cause of the problem, then Canon is well in their rights at that point to not honor the warranty. I would recommend that if you send it in for warranty that you make sure you remove the third party battery first.

The above is as I am given to understand, but have not actually read the rules (read applicable laws), so take it for what it is worth.

All of this aside,. there are established battery manufacturers with reputable names that make a product at least as good as the BP511s that come with Canon's name on them (of course it is one of these manufaturers that Make the batteries for Canon enyway)

There are substandard batteries as well.

If you get a name brand battery in the $30.00 - $40.00 price range you are getting the same quality as the batteries that Canon puts its name on.

Lenmar and Maha/Powerex are two established manufacterers.
