I was reading that for those special high speed cards like transcends 45x, sandisks ultra II, SimpleTech ProX, work best on higher end cameras and need an optimized CF slot. Does the a80 have it? I don't care if it transfers off the card faster to my computer, all I care is less lag in between taking pictures. I found a kingston 256 mb card for $53, and a transcend 256mb 45x card for $65. Is it worth the $12 difference for the Canon A80?

I doubt it because the camera is busy with more than just copying to the card - it has to create the .jpg etc! Have you tried asking CANON?

I e-mailed Canon and this is the response I got from them.
"The only feature on our PowerShot cameras that will utilize the high speed rated Compact Flash (CF) cards is the Continuous Shooting feature. Unless this one feature is of extreme importance to you, you will
honestly be wasting your money on a high speed rated CF card. The CF cards that come packaged with our cameras do not have a speed rating. I recommend that you purchase a CF card with the memory capacity in mind, not the speed rating."

Yes, the high speed cards are more suited for the pro level dSLRs. Even using the high speed mode, I don't think you will notice that much of a difference between the cards. But then again, if the card price difference is only $12, you can buy it, because the speedier transfer to your computer and eventual use in a better camera may make it worthwhile.

The main slow down between shots is the focusing and the exposure calculations by the DiGiC processor.
