Hi,
I know I have seen an answer posted to this question before but could anyone tell me how to calculate the various aperture settings on the G3 to their rough equivalents for 35mm?
I believe f8 is equivalent to roughly f16 or something like that but I would like to know specific numbers for using an older Canon flash. Any help would be appreciated.

You shouldn't need to convert anything to use any flash with the G3. If the f/8 is called as indicated on the flash, then f/8 is what you should set the G3 to.

That's right. These "equivalents" you're looking for are only for depth of field calculations.
For flash photography, f8 is f8 no matter what camera you're using.

Yes, as said here earlier the F stops are exactly the same, there is no conversion factors for all cameras and types of photography, just the same as shutter speed doesn't change from one camera to another. These settings are industry standards.

Hi and thanks for all of your help.
I think the confusion I encountered surrounded the depth of field/focal length issue. After testing the flash aperture settings I indeed realized the exposure corresponded to actual aperture fixed points.
I still don't know where the ideas come from about the equivalent settings but I have seen at least two posts on dpreview that indicate a higher f-stop equivalent. Who knows?
