Hi there,

tomorrow is my baby sisters, baby girls 1st Birthday, I want to just wander around taking shots and also the family shots I get asked for (you know the ones where my mother says make youre you get a photo of this and get one of that lol).

Now as I have mentioned before I am not so good at people shots (you will notice I have never posted a portrait lol). My question is, of my lenses would be the best for this?

50mm f/1.8 II
17-40mm f/4 L
100mm f/2.8 Macro
70-200mm f/4 L

and also would flash be best with or without my stofen diffuser?

Any tips to help would be great :-)

Regards Darren

Assuming you will be inside I would suggest the 17-40, as you will be pretty close to the action. Another assumption is that you will be in a location where it is possible to bounce the flash, so I would suggest doing so with either the diffuser or using the white card on your 580. Take your other stuff, too and do a little experimenting. Both of your primes might be useful for available-light shots, and the tele might be good for getting close-ups from across the room. After all, isn't that kind of flexiblity why you got a DSLR in the first place?

But happy to see that it worked out for you.

Have Fun,

I don't have shots I am happy with. My sister was wrapped in them but I was disapointed but here goes.

Exif. 1/200 sec, F/11, 70mm (70-200 F/4L), AV mode, ISO-100

Exif. 1/200sec, F/10, 50mm F/1.8 MKII, AV, ISO-100

I am unhappy with these the lighting seems off.

It has a very "film" look if that's what you're going for :D

Did you use flash? Bounce it? Strange, why did you stop it down so much? Shooting around f/4 to f/8 would be sharp enough, but f/10 gave you decent shutter speeds anyway.

Colour might be a white balance issue. Did you shoot RAW?

Much better. Going back to the first one you really notice how much green you pulled out of that beard. Why are you too "nervous" to shoot RAW? I'm too nervous not to.
