I'm looking around, and I see some different ones - some are Canon/Sigma and quite expensive, and others are no-name and cheap.
So, is there a huge difference in quality/features?
I'm really looking to use it for fashion-type shots instead of macro.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience in the costly ones vs. the cheap ones to know if it's worth shelling out for.

the ones that are used for macro work is no way near powerfull enough for fashion work, and I am afraid that the bigger ones are very expensive.

I did see a few of thoss DIY sites, and I might give it a try!
So, people who use the ring flash for portraits use a bigger one than normal? I haven't even seen any that are any bigger than others...

I have a friend that has one that he uses for glamour photograph. It is basically a very specialized flash head connected to a Profoto power pack (AC plug in). It works great. An odd but appealing quality of light, no shadows (the red eye is almost beyond belief).
But, this setup was pretty expensive. I suspect he has at least $1000.00 in it, possibly more.
A search through Profoto's website and/or B&H may reveal more detail

I looked around, and I've found some higher power lights, but no prices, so I'll have to do some research.
The $1000 price range is definitely too high for me.
I would consider building my own, but I have to figure out what kind of bulb would give me the right result.

Are you inclined toward a flash head? If so, it will be very hard to source a round flash tube that has sufficent diameter to fit around commonly used lenses.
I have personally constructed a few special purpose flash heads, but I have never found a flash tube that I could use for a ring flash. Thes would need to be plugged into a studio type power pack.
If you find one please let me know.
This place has a huge collection of bulbs, including flash tubes.
