I just got my Canon S3 IS a couple of weeks ago, and am still learning. Here are 2 pics of a British Airways jetliner landing at Bush Airport in Houston. I live within walking distance of this runway and can catch shots of the planes landing and taking off right over me. I'd like to go back and take more pictures when I have time. Im still a beginner. Are their any tips for taking good photos of the planes landing or taking off? All comments welcome.

I like the first shot. The second one you need to get up higher so you don't have the barbed wire running through the plane.

Did you do any post processing?

Auto Levels, Contrast, and Color, then lightened the shadows on the first pic.

I adjusted Levels and Color then real quick and cloned out (not very good)the top two rows of barbed wire on the second pic.

You might want to try playing with your White Balance if the camera will allow you to.

Being a n00b at this digital photography myself, I'm a bit cautious in passing too much comment. However the one thing I am learning is that taking the photo is only half of the story, post processing being the next bit in the chain.

As you haven't indicated in your profile that image editing is OK I wont post it here but this link will give you an idea of what can be done:

Just a quick stab at adjusting the levels from my limited to date experience :)

I agree with what has been said about the levels.

However, I do like the barbed wire in the second shot, it anchors it to the ground and gives it a sense of action/perspective. The only thing I would change is perhaps the angle (rotate) so that the wire ls level:

thanks for the comments and suggestions guys. Yeah I was driving by the runway when I seen this plane coming in for a landing and jumped out of the car and only had a limited amount of time to compose and focus the shot. I realized later the white balance was off. I didnt have time to set it up. It is real hazy and hot here in Texas, so the sky wasn't very dramatic. The shots had an orange tint to them.I'd like to take some pics at late evening or during a sunset, but that might be hard with a high shutter speed. The settings I used were handheld F/5, 1/1250 , 15mm focal length in Shutter priority mode. Im still learning about post processing, Imainly just snap off pics and keep it in its original form.

Here is another try at photo#1 after editing in photoshop. I added brightness and contrast, auto color, changed color of sky, added a cool filter, and added sharpness filter. Better or worse?

Momentz.. I kinda liked the fence in the foreground also even though it was not planned when i shot it. It gave the plane a sense of distance. Thanks for the rotating tip, it helped quite a bit. What kind of angles would yall suggest in my next shots? I plan on going out and taking more pics, and having them posted before the end of the week.

Much better, sky color doesn't look right though.
