An avocet with an itch and a mystery tern - quite large for a tern, about the size of a kittiwake

Broon, interesting pose on the double-banded avocet. Sorry that I can't help ID the tern but it looks like a juvenile to me. Nice capture though.

Incredible how these Avocets can turn the head and have a good scratch at the back of it.
Nice capture Broon.
As Stephen says it does have the markings of the juvenile with the black cap incomplete, if it's a large one is could be the Caspian Tern and the Caspian has black legs. It's a guess but that's the best I can come up with. If not it's more likely be the common Tern.
Excellent shot though and a good find, well done.

Broon, going by where you are in the UK I'd say it may be a Lesser crested tern. These have been known to breed on the Farne islands. Nice shot of both the avocet and tern

Yes the more I look at it I think Geoff is right, it does look more like the Lesser Crested Tern.

Nice sharp images here, tiny bit warm in a couple of places but very nice. I'd have to agree with the others. At first glance it looks like a Caspian, but would more likely be the Lessor Crested. Well done.
