am trying to learn the ropes of new lens - came across this bird this evening. At first I thought it might be an immature red-winged blackbird, but am not sure. The bill doesn't look right to me. On the other hand, it was next to a marsh, so chances are that's what it is.
Sorry for the poor quality of the shot - I'm on a learning curve and finding it hard going. Where have all the birdies gone, anyway?

I can't ID the bird, but I am pretty confident that it is not a RWB. You are correct about the bill, as it is too long for a RWB.
Edit: I did some checking in the Stokes guide, and according to it, the immature RWB should look a lot like the adult female, and the white wing bars on your bird are not characteristic of a female RWB, which is also more spotted on the back and the head. That, along with the long bill, is pretty conclusive. It may well be an immature bird, which are often difficult to ID because most guides only show adults.

after a lot of research, I'm starting to think it might be a Brown Thrasher. I don't think I've ever seen one before.

I'll vote brown thrasher too.. The yellow eye gives it away.
