again, no sun, some wind and a few pits. i am starting to think that 3 fps is too slow for surfing. on the barrel shot the next shot was underwater. 1 more shot on this sequence would have been my best shot
(content wise)yet. i think i will have to find a way to get the 20d. also, i am horrible with post processing. can anyone reccomend any books or dvd's?
thanks as always,
chuck

The first one is definitely your best that I've seen. A sunny day would have made that 10 times better.
Here's a link I find useful.

sk, thanks for the link, i will be sure to spend some time with it. what body are you shooting with? this last session made me really think about saving for the 20d for the 5 frames per second. also a larger burst when shooting raw. i would appreciate any info/advice you cold shed on this.
thanks,
chuck

I'm using the 20D and although it's more than the 350D, 5fps is still not enough for some tricks. I only get 6 frames in RAW before the buffer fills up so I can never complete a sequence. The guys I shoot always want sequences of their big air reverses but they take longer than 1 second to do, so I can't get the whole thing.
Honestly, it doesn't really matter when I start shooting from the water. I only want to shoot from the water in big barrels and 5fps is more than plenty for that kind of shooting. Also, a lot of people are doing flash photography in the water and you can only get one flash burst so it's important to work on timing.
If you want to upgrade then I'd buy a used 1D for around $1100 or maybe even a 30D because you'll get 11 shots off before the buffer fills. If you upgrade are you getting a water housing for it?

yeah, a water housing will have to be had no matter which camera direction i go. if i go 20d i can make my housing work with that body. my housing is made primarily for the 20d, so i think i could also get the 30d to fit with some adjustments to the "shims" inside the housing. the 1d i believe would require a new housing all together, kind of killing the budget in the process. i guess its time to start a little more research into the 30d and also the 1d. gotta start counting the jar of change again too.
thansk,
chuck

I'd say the 20D will work for you if you just want to shoot from the water. Because of the movement, after 6 frames the surfer will either be too far from you or completely out of view.
Check out the August issue of SURF mag. Steve Fitzpatrick has a 5 frame sequence (around page 110 or so) that he shot with the 20D and the 10-20mm. In the first frame the surfer is really far but in the last frame he's up very close. If he shot the surfer with 11 frames it would have been useless because the wave would have passed him.

Looks like fun! Nice shot on #1. A little croppipng might help the composition.

sk, right now i pretty much don't want to shoot if i can't be in the water. spoiled i guess. maybe it's just the challenge of trying to get one right. we will see though when it drops below 60. i spoke with the guy who built my housing and said pretty much the same thing about shooting in the water. since i usually shoot at about 12-14 mm, anything more than 5 shots is not really gonna work anyway. either too far away, flying by, or i have to go under. it's tough though to spend that much and be that close to a larger buffer and not pull the trigger on the 30d. gonna keep my eye open for both. imaginetnt, thanks. yeah i know i need to work on the stuff when i get out of the water. thats next.
