I want to get a Macro set for the G2. Is there a benefit of getting a 52mm filter set up versus a 49mm setup and why?
Canon versus Hoya?

Not much difference. Depends on how expensive your filter set is in 52 compared to 49.

It was said to me, one might be better off with a collection of 52mm filters if you ever decide to get a DSLR cam down the road.
