Hi Jeff
Love the shots! The one of Tony Stewart is this created in photoshop?
Just curious how you do it.

Nice work Jeff. I've been watching for you to post these. I didn't make it to the track this year so when I saw these crashes on TV I knew they were right in front of you. Nice job!

Thanks Tom, nothing spectacular there but, if you watched the broadcast then you did see me. LOL You just didn't know it. I had a couple of friends send me a screen capture of the broadcast I can be clearly seen walking towards the final resting place of Boris Saids car in my trademark Hawaiian shirt.
The Kahne crash was dead in front of me. I didn't think I would get the transmission on it because I was so directly in line but, the guy did get the transmission was happy as he;;. It was his first in 21 years shooting there lol.

I saw the Stewart shot earlier, and wasn't impressed by it... it just doesn't work for me. The frozen wheels really kill it. Maybe if there was a little motion (like a basic panning shot) with the filter applied... but as it stands, it just looks weird to me.
The other shots are very well done. I like the capture of Kahne's wreck, ouch... that was a hard hit... I also like the look on Boris' face, priceless!

LMAO Ahhh no I think that is your buddy. He was telling me Sunday on the way up to the media center for lunch how you and he have been emailing each other and plan on getting together for dinner and a few drinks over the winter. In fact I think he said something like...."You know I don't know of anyone in the turn I am better friends with than Rick."
Oh and before you say it, I asked if anyone wanted to go up for lunch and he just happened to be sitting on the shady side of your van and stuck his head around and said he would go.
LOL Sucker got the shot on the Kahne crash tho, must have been that new monopod.
edit: Oh and Todd, Stewart liked the same type shot of his Indy car back in 96 or 97 enough that he has it hanging in his home. It also may be one of the images that will be provided when people ask for items to be donated by the Tony Stewart Foundation for charitable organizations auctions. That should be finalized sometime next week. Your the first person I have ever run across that doesn't like that effect. Oh well, different strokes for different folks I guess.

I'm not saying that I don't like the concept, just the execution. The wheels on the car are not going round and round... they look parked. I can't see any motion in the car with parked wheels... no matter how much the rear of the car disappears. It is a cool trick, and I'm sure people like it... but there is more that can be done.
Not the greatest example, but just something I whipped-up:

Maybe I'm the only one that sees the difference... but with motion in the wheels and background it just adds to the motion in the rear of the car. Even if you just do a radial blur on the wheels. Something other than a parked car with a zoom in the back.

Actually Todd in the fullsize image you can see some motion on the lettering in the tires.
Thanks for your citique but, I believe I will keep doing it the way I have been for the last 12 years or so, however long I have had the filter.
In all that time your the only one who has complained, LOL and you ain't buying nuttin!!! :)

You know, when I first saw Jeff's Stewart shot, I was like "hey that is cool", but then when I saw the sample with the car already showing motion and then the filter applied, I was like "Dang, that is freaking amazing." It's much more dramatic.
I guess what I am saying is that just because you have done something the same way for 12 years or some driver likes it, doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.
Just my $.02 worth
