Ok I have been given the OK to use the hall at school. Size is about 17mtr x 9 mtr and 15ft ceiling with a skylight. I have balck sheets and white sheets for backdrops and floor. I have stools beanbagand othe bits.
So how many would be intrested? When should we look at this?

that sounds interesting. I have always wonted to try studio work, but 1. don't have the full kit and 2, don't have a studio. FYI I do have a 550ex flash which I don't use that much.
edit, it's a shame we can't find a model somewhere

Does sound interesting Tony - this weekend's free... will see if we can talk Fiona into coming along. She probably won't be keen if there's a cast of thousands, but we'll see!

Im in as well.
Hopefully Ill be able to borrow Petes optical tigger for the 550ex, which I can use as a main light, and use the on camera flash on the A80 as fill. (yes Im serious).
Or I could ask nicly and borrow a 20D :D
Maybe we should all put out company emails, Im sure at least one of us works with someone extroverted enough to do some modeling.

good on ya, well sorted!.
I'll be in, cannae do this weekend or the next though. Might as well tell yas a little about meself so as to get a few takers... without sounding big headed :-(. Dont get the wrong idea though cause i need inspiration as much as any to 'break out of the box' and learn new things.... Started my career in group and single portraits, graduations and things like that, moved onto a portrait company in australia, a weeks solid training in posing, edicate etc, became top photog within the year, bought the NZ part of their biz. got bored, went on cruiseships as a photographer, became manager after first ship. to give you an idea, cruiseships do portraits every second night or so, with lights and with interior lowlight-ambient + flash. of course it gets rather boring after a while doing the same old stuff, but I've found that it all comes down to body movements and positionings and composition. and then of course theres the lighting :-).
This is one of those opportunities which dont come around too often, creative minds throwing all sorts of ideas at each other in a huge area with room to set anything up you like, and getting some awesome images and a huge amount of learning in one day!. boom!!
havent asked my girl Zoe yet, but I'm sure she'll be into it as long as theres other girls she can natter to and have a laugh with. don't think she'd be too keen on being the only girl though so....
I can also bring a laptop for any pp or for burning cd/dvd's. huge peice of black polythene, a blue paint scattered portrait backdrop(which i personally hate ;-)) a set of bowens lights(2) with umbrellas, a 120x80 softbox, some light and backdrop stands.
we could do 2 set ups, one with a backdrop and one using a part of the hall or something for some more grungy/street kinda looks?.
lizard
7th of August 2006 (Mon), 22:22
Tell zoe not to worry, ill be there too :-) she and i can 'natter' away together ;-)
also im not against being a model if theres no one else.
though once we have a date/time etc i may be able to rope a friend or two into it :-P

The hall is big enough to setup 2 areas as long as we dont trip off each others flashes. I will post some pics of the hall tommorow.
One half of the wall is one of those rock climbing things
MHP
7th of August 2006 (Mon), 22:37
cool, a climbing wall!... could create an interesting effect if lit right.. yeah the triggering should be o.k. might just have to time it. we'll be right, could put the polythene between the two, that might stop it a bit. i do have a radio slave set up for them, but it seems to have a mind of it's own!
cool Lizard, she'll be glad to hear that.

Well done, Tony.
August 26/27; September 2/3; September 9/10?
Time needed to arrange equipment, etc. Worth hiring a model? Is there a Modelling School nearby that might be able to assist?

.............as long as we dont trip off each others flashes. ..............
It depends how they are fired, with a 580, 550 or ST E2 you can change the requency they work on, so you can have multiple set ups.
Im sure the same is true with your modeling lights.

Yes but my trigger will fire on any other flash going off, it just sees a bright light and triggers off whatever is attached to it!
I did have an idea to get around this when I was messing with it, it involded fibre optic cable, duct tape and bluetac.

If I can say one thing you will learn of extreme importance at anti-natel classes, forget the rest you only need to know this:
Babies come out purple. Got that purple, that is normal, they then pink up over the next few minutes. I have known many a panic caused by not knowing this fact!

For normal births they can come out with pointy heads but that normalises as they become pinkish... also, they come with life altering experiences, namely sleepless nights... expense cuts... (there goes your new lens) BUT, it is all worth it;) ... at least until they start dating:lol:

The problem with the 380 (in fact the 420 & 550, not sure about the 430 and 580), is that you have to power them off and on again after a manual fire from a slave or PC sync. Many years ago I had my 380 on a optical slave to use with my P & S, everytime it fired I have to switch off and on again. Moppie and I tried it again a few weeks ago with my 420 and his 550, same problem
20D, 30D, 5D and 1D Series all have PC Sync sockets, it is the 300/350D users who will need an adaptor.

Interesting - had a play with a piece of wire across the 380 terminals earlier & it seemed happy enough to fire at will... we'll have to see what it does being triggered off a PC socket.

I was looking at setting up at 12 and getting started at 1pm. Pete how does that work for you?

That will work, I will just need to think about packing down at 3pm, so that is at least two hours, so still worth it :D

I am hoping my two young (3 and 5) grandsons and their mum and dad can come along for photos. Is that suitable, and if so what time should I suggest to them? Can you give specific directions to find the venue?

Mangere College ...Bader Drive Mangere. Drive in the only open gate and it is the building behind the administration block Basically the building straight in front of your nose park around the side. Come between the admin block and H-Block only 1 set of doors open follow the bright lights :)

Thanks Weka. I take it that it's ok to have my 2 grandsons along with their mum and dad - if families are being catered for first, what time frame should I suggest?

We should have two full setups to choose from, I probably won't be doing much shooting, just there for the fun :D If you specify a time I am sure it will happen. I will be packing down my kit at around 3ish though.
We did three familys on last Saturday morning in two hours including feeding and chatting, I wouldn't think you would need more than half an hour as long as everyone has brought their smiles!
