I have heard that most professional photographers use the Mac. But I don't know very many that use it. So I wanted to poll the POTN community.
Which OS do you use? I mean most of the time for Photography.

I use OSX at work (I work for UF Engineering Publications) and Windows XP at home. Both have features I like, neither have enough advantage to make me switch.

The moment this thread degrades to namecalling, flaming, rudeness whatever it will be locked just like so many previous threads on this subject.
And coreypolis Your post raises the first yellow flag!

I dont see why.
Go down the list of the new 10.5 upgrades, half of them are in windows, or avalible via a cheap 3rd party application.
Most all Windows Vista's features are found in osx 10.5
They both have a nearly identical interface, so similar in fact that a PC can be made to look near exactly like a mac.

All work, Mac/Windows run Photoshop perfectly and soon the mac will be as fast, use whatever you're comfortable with. Mac can run the PC version of photoshop natively with bootcamp or virtualisation software.

Slap on the hand...received. My apologies.

mac for photos, because color management is built into the operating system, and ICC profiles are a snap to use.
mac for daily use, because data is more secure.

I'm saving up right now to upgrade to the new iMac. My present iMac is still very useable, but it can't handle Aperture. I've played with this program a bit and I love some of the things it does.... though it's not all perfect, it's still a nice program and should make processing my RAW photos easier. I'll still need PS7 to do certain stuff.

A computer is just a tool. That what brand you use is some reflection of personality is a really shallow notion. I use both at work. I have a PC or four at home. They do different things better, and they do similar things differently, and some things - like Photoshop - are pretty much the same. There some things that I can do on one, that other really cannot do at all. It's a toss up, but for the purpose of this topic, I answered Windows.

Been using Macs for years and years and years.....
It used to be that I couldn't tell people which chip company I worked for during the day, but since we now supply Apple.......

I've decided to merge the two threads. No sense having two polls (or more?)running at the same time
Interesting comments and info on Mac
I use windoze mostly because it's potentially cheaper but occasionally i'm in dispair when something has gone wrong with windows **yet again** :(:(:(
One of these days i might get the chance to properly experience mac (i.e use for some time)

I've been using a Mac for 22 years and PC for 15. With the release of XP/Pro I see parity between the two as far as day-to-day Photoshop, Lightroom, Portfolio sort of work. Both are on a wireless network and files on each are accessible by the other. Both can print to a wirelessly networked Epson R2400. My next computer will be a Mac Pro portable so I can run memory hogging photo editing and transforming apps with reasonable speed; use apps like Microsoft Project in XP on the sale dual boot machine; and in general not miss out on advances on both computing platforms as both companies leapfrog each other.
I originally chose a Mac over DOS and CRM machines because I could start using it as a writer right out of the box. Over the years Apple has lost that advantage. The developers at both companies have finally decided to make systems that people can actually use without getting their hands dirty. Maybe they just got tired of troubleshooting their family members systems.
I've seen all kinds of stuff as a software developer for the graphic arts industry for the past 20 years.

I got introduced to a Mac when I was going to school for graphic design and have been using them ever since. But now I'm getting a little annoyed w/ my Mac because I'm having posterization issues all of a sudden and I don't know why...However it isn't necessarily a Mac problem.

I'm getting really tired of Windows... I have 3 PCs, 2 purchased in the last year, and they are hard work and their performance deteriorates over time. I run a Windows development company, so I know Windows inside out, it's not pretty (although .Net is great). Vista is sadly disappointing.
Here's the rub: The Mac OS X is far superior to Windows for 2D work compared to XP and Vista unless software is re-written for .Net 3.0 the graphics system (WPF) on Windows. It is not easy to mix current apps with .Net 3. Outside of .Net 3 any fancy 2D stuff on Windows does not have hardware support (e.g. alpha blends) so it sucks! Mac OS X has excellent hardware support for 2D graphics.
I have a 20" G5 iMac for photo editing -- brilliant. My next computer is going to be an Intel MacBook Pro, running Windows under Parallels virtual machine for when I need to run Visual Studio etc. I am waiting for the MacBooks to upgrade to the new Intel Merom chips next month -- I can't wait.

I recently Switched and own a 17" Mac Book Pro 2 gigs and 2.16 ghz processor. This thing is amazingly fast, runs windows like a charm. and photoshop wether its running under rosetta, or under windows works awesome. for small edits i just run photoshop in osx, when i need to actually do some hdr or multiple layer work i run it in windows. Once Photoshop is native ill be fully mac. I was a long time windows user, and still use windows, i dont hate it. But after being on osx and using a apple product i take back all the hating i used to to, and all the making fun of people i used to do. I used to bash people for spending so much money on a brand name. Well i believe now that you pay for quality. the way these things work and how streamline they are is amazing. I love it!
Here in a month or so i plan on getting a MacPro Desktop. i cant wait!

i'm kinda impartial... i grew up with windows... hadn't heard of mac till like 4 years ago, well had heard but had never come into contact.... of course as a window 'washer' lol i was totally against them, but then my mate sat me down and showed me the mac powerbook 12 inch G4 in action... 2 months later i was unwrapping a silver Xmas present lol... i now run windows and mac... don't know which I prefer, i think for pros maybe mac.. they have aperture so that SEEMS to tip the scales... not sure though.
ok fine= MAC!!! but only coz they are soo funky and cool lol

Hi all. I saw a tagline a couple of weeks ago, that went something like this, "Asking a photographer what kind of camera he uses is like asking a writer what kind of typewriter he uses". The point of course is that tallent will come forward no matter what kind of equipment you use. I would postulate that the same holds true here. I suspect there are some great results from both platforms, and also some lousy results from both platforms.
I think the writer/typewriter question applies here as well . . . just my $.02 . . .
