Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT Digital Field Guide http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0764588133/sr=1-7/qid=1155043105/ref=sr_1_7/002-9300222-0534401?ie=UTF8&s=books

Both my friend and I used this book more than the manual and it was great!!!!

"Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera" by Bryan Peterson

For the basics of good photography, that is... This is one that taught me a great deal.

I second the Bryan Peterson book. Read the whole thing and now I shoot Manual in RAW. The Canon manuals are not bad. If you want to learn about your camera and the manual won't do it for you, the Magic Lantern books rephrase the manuals and may be useful to you. Get a used one on ebay.

I've mentioned this before, but I found Digital SLR Cameras and Photography for Dummies to be a good resource to understand the basics, it has plenty of examples and was very easy to read and understand. I have Carzee to thank for the idea for the avatar.

The only trouble I had with the book was coming to grips with the fact that if I'm reading this book, I must be a dummy! ;)

Don't you have to pass some sort of test to be allowed to purchase it? ;)

I have been reading Digital Photography by Eismann, et al. Simple to read, covers only the basics so far (I am only half through maybe it will pick up in the second have). I would say it is above average for an introductory book, though.

Eisman's was the book recommended by my digital camera instructor. I've found it very informative, and interesting to read.

As a second source of information, I've recently acquired "Photoshop Elements 4" from The Missing Manual Series, by Barbara Brundage. Wish I'd had it months ago.

How simple do you want because I have the Digital SLR book and it's very small and easy to carry around.

The Eismann book will definately get you on your feet. It also covers post processing.
