Great selection of shots Ian. Your getting quite adept at capturing sparks;) , and I really like the spray behind the airborne cars.

I take it that 1 series cameras are champagne proof then?;) :p

Cheers,

Simon.

Looking at #1 again, what I thought were sparks could be reflections from the light pod:oops:

Hi Ian,

Love these shots. Can I ask about your setup for shot 1? I am guessing fast glass, manual mode and remote flash of sorts?

How did you setup for this? How did you get the metering right? I'm jealous

Thanks and well done.

Thanks Simon, the camera was fine but it did cause the flash to hiccup a bit:rolleyes:

Thanks, it's quite a popular spot up on the mountain at Brandywell but the midges up there seem to like all of the insect repellants we had hence the couple of hundred midge bites on my head :(

Thanks for the comments, that shot was taken with a 1DMKII on manual at 1/250th at F4 with a 70-200 f2.8 L is lens and a 580 flash again on manual at 1/2 power.

Thanks Ian - Sorry to bug, but.....how do you arrive at these setting. Is it trial and error, is it a light metre, is it loads of histogram chimping. My problem is the time it takes to get a setting like this right.

thanks again.

No worries, the settings I use for night time shots are always basically between 1/160th to 1/250th and either f4 or f5.6 I usually take a few test shots before the main field to see how they look and refine them as needed. I always keep the flash on manual and reduce it to half power or sometimes lower to stop it bleaching the front of the car out. I know that if I set my camera and flash up like this I am going to get a fairly decent shot. The problem with the first shot in the sequence was that because I wanted a fairly low down shot I couldn't see the cars until they came over the crest so I pre focused on the point where I was going to take the shot. Also although it doesn't look very dark in the shot it was actually pitch black.
