Fourth time shooting horses and First time assisting an equine photographer Sunday at the Howard County Fair Draft Horse and Mule Exhibition. I loved the big horses. I was tickled, because this crowd LIKES pictures of the horse's rear. I know the exposure is off in some and didn't get timing as well as I could and cropped too tight. I was using the 70-200 the whole time. Next time going to slap lens on that new film camera and have it ready. So it's alot...over 50 pictures. If you do brave it through let me know what you think, especially about composition.
Thanks! Select Sports and then 2006 Howard County Fair Draft and Mule Exhibition

I think you did a great job! We are having the Budweiser Clydesdales visit next weekend, as part of our Tricentenial celebration, and I'm hoping to get a shot at them.
I think you did a very nice job on your angles.

Thank you! Now I can start the day off on a high note! The Bud horses are really exciting. I saw them once many years ago. I hope you get some good shots and please post. btw, I looked at your blog and I love your work. The starving swallows is incredible! Have you shown that? I bet it is worthy of some major recognition. Is there a link to the Tricentenian Celebration?

I think if you google "Chestertown, Maryland", you should find a link to the Tricentennial information. It's a season long event - started back in April and runs through the Fall. I think the "Horses to Hummers" parade on August 12th is the next event, to be followed by a big Crab Feast sometime in September.
Thanks for the comments on my blog. I'm just getting my feet wet in this photo thing and am not ready for contests and such. Really and truly. For every goodish picture I manage, there's still about fifty throw-aways.:)

Stacie,
Thanks! Are you going to the Frederick Fair in September? I am going to shoot at the one also. Are you familiar with Equine Photographers Net? It's pretty cool.

Thanks MCStargirl! Thought I would start trying to play with black and white. I probably need more time in photoshop to get the levels better. I looked at your web, and I really in your equestrian section, the woman (mom?)standing next to the girl on the horse and I adore the one of the little girl riding with her tongue sticking out! It's hard being around these darn horses...I am starting to want one!

Nice shots neighbor :). The woman, , who owns the farm I keep my horses at will be at Howard on Thursday with 7 horses mostly brood mares and a foal. The fair grounds is less than 10 minutes from where we board. We ride with hounds out of that property onto the land across rt.144. I love horse shots keep up the good work.

That is cool! I forgot we are so close. I was very impressed with Howard Co Fairgrounds and the quality of some of the horses. Lucky you! It is just beautiful up there. I am planning on going to the Frederick County Fair early next month. Thanks for the kind words.

Looks like there are a few of us Mont. County Horse nerds here :)
(I'm right over the HoCo/MoCo line and hunt as well) (in further small world news, the longs have a mare that used to live with me!) ;)
Lovely pics, I love the big drafties!

Small world! Mare hmmmmm? Cherry Float? My name is Zane we may know each other in such a tight horse community. I ride with HCIB and shoot sometimes at hunt events and Maryland steeplechase. Photodawg who started this thread shoots some nice Md. horse show stuff. I think she is in P.G.

The One and only Cherry ;) Little Ms. Thang could get out of any stall I put her in, she was pretty funny.
I have been following the OP's posts, I love seeing other Horse photo enthusiasts.
I'm sure we've run into one another at some point, I know many folks at HCIBH, and have ridden all over the area. PT me if you'd like, i dont want to sidetrack away from the OP's great pics :)

Glad it's a small world. No worries, stay! I love this conversation LOL I am sure you guys will want to pm each other. That is incredible, you could almost be blood bros! Makes me happy! Please keep me in the equine loop! Are either of you going to Frederick horse show next month?

Probably wont make Frederick, unfortunately my weekends are limited to taking care of our own horses, and visiting the racetrack (my other love--for the horses, not so much the gambling) ;)
There are some great horse events coming up though, Fair Hill I believe is this weekend?

I did! Thats actually at the racetrack though. At fair hill there is a combined training event--you'd get the opportunity to shoot over fences and on the flat (dressage)

Here is a link for the Fair Hill Event--very fun to go shoot!(this site is for the 3star, but the smaller stuff is going on this weekend)

Yep! Thats what I was saying--sorry i tend to forget my thoughts halfway through.
there is an event this weekend that would give you lots of opportunity to shoot horses. "Fair Hill" has a rather humongous and famous event in the fall, that's not this weekend (its in october) Additionally there will be great competition there this weekend, just not on the scale of the one in the fall--hope that made more sense :)
If thats too much out of the way, there is a local calendar that lists horse events in the area--

That would just be too awesomely fantastic! That is really what I have been hungering to shoot. I would love it. I saw directions. I will have to find the calendar. Do I need clearance from anyone? What time to be there? Yes you made sense, I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. Anything I didn't ask that I should know? How the heck am I going to sleep tonight?
PM me if you like.

. . Do I need clearance . It is a public event so you are welcome to shoot from anyplace the public shoots. To shoot on course you need to get a press pass from most places which is getting harder with many more people shooting these days.Depending on the venue this can be great shooting or not so great. What you do with the images as far as marketing them varies. Some venues want a vendor fee if you are selling pictures at/from their event. I am not an expert on this and there are several gray areas.

Thanks Short, pm'd Cleverer and that is pretty much what they said too. I used to be into riding years ago and would go to these events every chance I could. I am hoping I can get at least some good shots of some of the jumps and dressage...I wouldn't even buy any of my own prints right now, LOL! Just trying to get opportunity to practice. It is nearly a two hour drive, so I would be pretty disappointed if I couldn't come away with some decent shots.

That's funny, I have to force myself to shoot anything else!! A friend told me the other day "there's more to life than taking photos of horses!" Bring on the HORSES I say. The more, the better.
