View Full Version : This is how my G1 died and came back from the dead

The first signs of trouble that my G1 (2+yrs old) is not OK appeared when the I could not shoot more than 40 pictures w/o flash at the state fair (in a span of 2 hrs). I thought -may be the camera was not charged. When connected for charging, it recharged (rapid blinks) in less than 30 min!
Next shoot was also short lived -35 pictures (w & w/o flash).
Third time the camera died after 40 pictures, with lens hanging out.

Contacted Canon and got some rotten advice (I was asked to purchase the AC adapter & The battery, I refused to shell out $225 in accessories for undiagnosed problem). Ultimately shipped the dead baby for evaluation by Canon repair service. They tried to stick the $155 charge, but I did not sway from my stand "to be heard". Finally -some one understood the "enormity of injustice" and approved for the repairs to be done w/o charge. Thank god.
I have described (in this forum) what the problem was.
Now my camera is back, I recently shot 85 pictures (mostly with flash) without any shortcomings.

Shekhar, thanks for your post. my G1 has the same problem. Did you repair it in US and will you be kind enough to tell me who you spoke to?

Thanks so so much for giving hope.

I am in US. Talked to Mr. Walker (?) extension 247 at the Ill reapir facility.
Good luck with your G1.

Can you tell me how you got in touch with Mr Walker at the Ill repair facility.
I would like to talk to him about my "dead with tongue" out problem.
Is there any chance Canon will do it for free since it seems to be an universal problem?

Shekhar:

Thank you for sharing your ultimately positive experience. Some thoughts and questions about your GX 1 woes -- did Canon repair tell you what the root cause of your GX1's untimely "death" was, and is it still working well? Mine recently died and will not work unless plugged into AC power (even though the battery is good - tested in another GX1)

Thanks,

Hi all, thanks for the postings. I've got my G1 back today.

I had the tongue out problem too, and sent it for repair 2+ wks ago. I received it today via Fedex.

What they repaired was the DC converter (within the camera). I felt there was a loose screw in the camera, but nothing was mentioned about that in the repair slip.

Hey Dead G1 owners: I have read a few posts from many of you regarding the fuse problem, "Proflex" (John) "Civi"and others. http://members.optusnet.com.au/~jono/PowerInterfacePCB.JPG and http://perso.wanadoo.es/civi_/index.htm)
My G1 died a couple of weeks ago and thats when I started reading about the G1 "power problem".
I ordered the fuse from canon parts, same 800 number that is on their website((800) 828-4040), part # KE32. The tech on the phone did not know the specs, even that it was a 3.15 amp fuse, but he did know that there are 2 fuses on the board, KE25 and KE32. Thanks to the photos from Civi, I concluded that the 2.5 amp fuse was #KE25 and that the KE32 was the 3.15 amp fuse.
It us delicate work and it took me two attempts for the soldering step, but in the end only took about 2 1/2 hours!
It cost $7 delivered and works fine so far after one day!
Be sure to observe the length of the screws in each area and whether it is fine machine thread (screwing onto steel) or a more like a screw(screwing into plastic).
Hope that helps some of you.
