View Full Version : How much beating and bad weather can this baby survive?

I've just got a 10D. On the soccer-matches of my local team, there's usually quite a bit of photographers from the big newspapers here in norway. Most of them with big shiny white lenses =) They're not as close as I can see if it's a 10D, 1D, 1Ds they're using, but anyways..
No matter how the weather is, they stand outside, shooting pictures even in big-time rain. And a soccer-match last for 2x45min. Is this safe with my 10D? Does it survive rain and snow? I'm always skeptical to pull out the cam to take a shot if it rains. I do believe this also is very dependent on the lens. Wouldn't be fun to get water inside it. I got the 50mm f/1.4. Guess it's not properly weather-sealed, so I won't use it in rain for anything more than a short amount of time.
But what about the weather-sealed L-glass? Are there no chance in h*ll that water will find it's way into it? Can it be used outside in the rain for hours without problems?
But then again. It's my 10D body that's my main concern. How is it shielded against rain/snow. You got any information/experience on this?

I think I'm right in thinking that the 10D isn't enviromentally sealed. Therefore, it isn't likely to survive anything more than a light shower.
The same goes for most consumer lenses.
As an aside, I was at the GB Rally on Thursday. Saw one of the press photogs drop his 1Ds with a big Canon 600mm L series lens into a water splash while he was crossing it.
It was submerged in about a foot of water for about 30 seconds while the guy fished about for it. He wiped it down with a towel and then further dried the objective of the lens with what looked like tissue paper. 20 seconds later the next rally car came through and he was shooting again. :D

What to say? LOL! :-P I suddenly understand why that bastard cost what it do =) BTW: Are you travelling to rally-sweden in Februar? I think I'm gonna drag my camera over from Norway, and take some pictures while cheering at Solberg :) Would love to go to Catalunya or GB instead, but don't think I can afford it. I plan a trip someplace with some friends in the summer. If it doesn't turn out that we will do it, I'm gonna take the holliday-money and save for Catalunya or Wales instead though, so I can watch our Petter humiliate Loeb again =)

Sweden ? Not in my current plans. But I really must get over there one year as it really isn't far.
I have got Australia and Cata scheduled, but Aus is looking unlikely due to work commitments at the moment.
However, I'm working on press accreditation for next years Rally GB through a friend who works in the WRC circus. I'll see how that goes, but knowing ISC it won't be easy. :)
And what about Solberg ? The guy is a star. I've never seen anyone so happy to win a rally or a rally championship. And more importantly, he did work hard for it through the year but maybe was handed the win by Loeb. doesn't matter, he is World Champion and I couldn't be happier.
Cheers

I wish I could go to Cata or GB. If Solberg is competing for the title at the end of next season, I probably will go no matter what :) But for now, I plan on sweden. It's fairly short, so through the Solberg supporter-club, I can get the trip with hotel and everything pretty cheap. But do you know at what time of the day they drive in swedish-rally? I would love to take som pics, but if they're driving at night in Februar, it'll be pitch-black, and the only thing to capture will be 4-6 enormous headlights =)

The 10D IS NOT sealed like a 1D or 1Ds!
I got my 10D a bit wet very early in a lite shower... (it was worth it for the pics I got! :) )
On the way home I passed my favorite camera shop and decided to stop in ot get a UV filter for what was then a brand new lens. (first day out with 50-500mm)
Anyway,. I asked what was the best way to dry a 10D.... the store managers jaw droppped,... they looked at me like I had lost a child!!!
As I say it was a lite shower... so the 10D survived,. but I have not let it get wet like that since.
I simple ziplock bag will help, and there are plastic covers specifically made to keep cameras dry. If you intend to do this type of shooting in harsh environments,.. definately get some protection for that 10D and lenses.

10D, definitly not protected. 100-400 LIS, not protected. My new 17-40 is though (great lens).
I am seriously considering getting some weather protection for my equipment.
I keep telling my fiancee that the only way I can protect my 10D from the rain is to make it look like a 1D(s) - quickes way to do that is buy a 1D :D :D

Well, VVizard, you have pre empted my question. Around 50% of my income comes from sports(soccer) photography this season my new 10D hasn't been tested for bad weather no doubt it will be tested at one point.
I use a large thick plastic bag, make a hole for the eye piece and not too tightly place an elastic band on the hood of my 70-200 2.8 lens.
I also wear a large hat (much to the amusment of the crowd) simialair to aussie type hat, it's waterproof and the rim keeps the majority of the rain of my camera. I haven't got my 10D wet yet but I am concerned about the plastic cover covering the in/out connection. Keep in touch and tell me how you get on

This is a question that I too have. I have only had my 10D for going on one month now, and so far, so good. I live in the hot dusty climate of Southern Nevada, USA. I'm hoping my sensor doesn't develop any problems from the dust either.

Check this out.

Has a very good reputation among American sportshooters. Aussie made, not cheap! $250for a kit for a 10D/1D plus 70-200 2.8
If you are earning money with your cam this is a very viable option, hell of a lot less to pay out for than a waterlogged (stuffed ) 10D
The 1D and latest series 'L' glass is water resistant to a rain fall rate of 10 inches per hr according to Chuck Westfall Technical Director of Canon U.S.A.
So technically the 1D that got a complete immersion above is stuffed but it may take a month or so to become apparent.

Keep that baby dry. A few drops or snowflakes won't hurt it, but dry it off with a clean cloth as soon as possible. My 10D has seen it's share of rain and snow in the field, but my paranoia over a "wicked witch of the west" meltdown has kept it alive so far.
