I've just prepped a new S2 with factory batteries inserted per directions and the default memory card inserted per directions. When I press the release button on the mode lever and turn the mode lever to shooting, nothing happens. The power/mode lamp does not light. (The release botton does not "click" and stay left for shooting mode, it goes back to center--right?) Is there any reason for this behavior other than bad batteries from Canon? Thanks for your advice--

That particular behavior is normal... but I'm not sure why you're not getting the light or any action from the camera. Triple-check the orientation of the AA batteries, and the little flat disc memory battery. Ditto the suggestion about making sure the door is firmly making contact with the batteries. Good luck -- hope you get it sorted out soon!

Thanks for your help, kawwauser and RossW. The battery compartment latch slide had not returned to the closed position toward the center of the camera body—i.e., the cover door was not properly closed.
