Hi all,

Been MIA for a few weeks, I had my son 11 days ago on July 29th at 12.50pm after a fast 2 hour labor (barely made it to the hospital, my hubby estimated from the time we parked the car til I had delivered was about 7 mins), it was so fast in fact my hubby missed it all, he came in to the delivery room after it was all over with. :p
I had a healthy 7lbs 8oz boy, we named him Joshua Graham.
Unfortunantly he showed some high CRP levels 24 hrs after birth (a protein that can be an indicator of oncoming infection) so he had to spend an extra 7 days in the hospital, just got to take him home this past Sunday. It was a rough last week on me not having my baby home, we spent about 11 hrs a day in the hospital with him tho, still not the same as bringing him home.
Anyways, he's home and doing fine now. The antibiotics killed off whatever infection might have been coming on and all his bloodwork has come back ok, so I guess we're in the clear.
And of course it didn't take mommy long to dig out her camera gear again and do newborn photos with him. The BW one I took Monday when he was 9 days old and the color one I took yesterday at 10 days old.
Not the best but mommy seems to be a little out of practice. Lets call it sleep deprivation for my sake. ;)
Taken with my handy dandy 20D, studio lights and props. With the help from hubby and my MIL of course.

Pictures removed: If you wish to see them, please PM me for a link.

Congrats on the Younglin!... Looking happy and healthy, I reckon.

I have had just two nephews born in the last 60 days, and my second kid (baby girl) less than 10 weeks away, so I have been practicing like crazy.

Anyhow, a couple of things I have learned recently. I tend to favor belly up shots, the babies tend to respond more favorably, and it is always helpful to have a parent (the dad in this case) talk to them, just out of your frame, trying to get their attention.

I really liked your baby at hand photo, I would suggest that if you try that one again, you get closer to the baby (maybe little less focal range but closer to subject) and then lower yourself a little more, having a low angle into the photo will give it a feeling of dominance, which is contradictive and helps to the image in general (huge hand, tiny baby).

What I do is I watch the babies for a long time, even through the viewfinder, but rarely pressing the shutter. After an hour maybe, or 30 mins, I am finally able to get a nice burst of four to five photos. The rest of the time is spent framing the photo, trying to anticipate the gesture, looking and identifying expressions, etc.

Same with grown ups. I always talk to strangers for a while before taking a single photo if I can. As I get to meet them and break the ice, I notice facial features, gestures, expressions, tendencies (some people tend to talk while looking down, or look always to the left, etc).

Whatever the case, congrats once more on the quick and safe delivery, and you willl have to pass on the secret for the speedy labor, since with my first kid, the wife had an 18 Hr labor (36Hrs from Potocin start). It was a long day.

Cheers,

Thanks Mario.
Not my best session no, I think I had better shots with my niece back in March than I did this time. I had some belly up pictures but I wasn't too crazy about them myself. And I had numerous shots of hubby in the frame but most of them he or the baby was moving, I'll probably do a reshoot of those. I had a few from my first two with their daddy and wanted some with Josh and his dad too but these just didn't turn out, so I'll wait a week or so and try again.
Thanks for the tips.
LOL I dunno if there's a secret to my fast deliveries...well fast and fast, I've gone faster each time, first labor was 16hrs, second less than 6 and this one about 2 hrs. I think all natural, no drugs or interventions helped a bit, seems like it anyways. Best of luck to you and your wife, I wish you two a safe and speedy labor!

Yup I had him but for obvious reasons couldn't come on to post about it til now. Yeah I'm relieved that the infection never got a chance to start, but those 7 extra days sure sucked big time and it WAS hard. My ILs came and got my 2 older kids and had them at their house all of last week so hubby and I could spend the days at the hospital with Josh. Like my hubby said, with some of the problems that can come from the infection they were fearing a week in the hospital isn't much, he even thinks it would be worth a year in the hospital to avoid those problems. I agree but it still sucked since I couldn't stay there with him, I'm sure that would have made it A LITTLE easier, but having to drive off without your baby after delivering was VERY tough. The kids really didn't bond with him either this way, it wasn't until we brought him home that they finally realized he was ours to keep and they're going better now with him than the few visits they had with him in the hospital. *sigh* Oh well its all over with and we're happy, healthy and home - that's all that matters now.

Sooooooo cute - they're both great, but I LOVE the colour one :-) Congrats!!!

Thanks!
The only thing I don't like about the color one is that he kept grabbing the fabric and pulling it up infront of his face so I couldn't see his features. Oh well, he did his own posing I guess. ;)
