I am afraid your focus looks off... it seems really soft.

Your right about the colors, real nice.

Like photog_87 wrote "it seems really soft" the Exif of your picture shows you took it at F3.5 that doesn't give you much depth, that may be the reason or was it cropped from a much larger version?

But it's still a fun shot :)

Kansasmom- I like the shot, and specially the vision for it.

In this case, the ducks are vibrant in color. Trying to put myself in your shoes, I can see how I would not try and get a different (lower) angle on the ducks, as this would show the edge or wall of the container they were in. (Had there just been more water there!).

Having a prime lens also takes away the opportunity to play with the composition, to add or subtract elements from the photo.

I see nothing wrong with the focus. I personally like the disarray of the ducks, and the water edges around them (making them pop up). The 50mm lens is my favorite one, when I am not lugging my bags of stuff on assignment, I usually keep a camera with the thrifty fifty (should be renamed to 'mighty fifty'), as it is one of the most versatile lenses for general press and portrait photography.

Below are two tests that I played with, one with Color effects (I felt the strong theme of the photo was colors, and the duckies were only dependent on those colors), and the second test a simple crop, perhaps trying to find a better arrangement that would be more pleasing to the eye.

Still, we do the best we can out on the field, and then we create the rest on the Computer (unless it is press, then one can get in trouble for adding non existant elements to a simple photo -as it has recently made the news).

cheers and greetings, you always take really good photos, so keep on posting !! (Your approach to kids and people in general is IMO, incredible). :)
