View Full Version : Pink 'halo' when taking direct sun shots?

I've had this Canon A610 since November and have taken a couple thousand shots with it.

I mainly use it for photographing my detailing work, so please excuse the lack of composition for the shot below.

Any ideas why this pink 'halo' is around the sun reflection?

This was taken in Custom Mode, EV 0, Vivid Colors, and resized in Pshop. This happens on all of my direct sun shots.

Thanks in advance.

It is called lens flare. It occurs when shooting directly to bright light. For SLR, some lens produces more flare than others. Also, adding lens filter would cause more severe flare if the filter does not have special coating.

cfc: Thank you. I heard an ND filter might rid this problem. Do you find that to generally be true?

nope. any filter is more likely to cause more reflections.

To follow up on that, the flare is caused by light scattering at each glass/air or glass/glass interface. Adding an ND filter will simply reduce the amount of light entering the lens while adding another air/glass interface which will allow more scatter.
