Have any of you guys that use the 1ds had any trouble with the tripod socket stripping out? I have had the camera for 5 months and within the first 6 weeks I have had to send in the camera to get the socket replaced. I have since been VERY careful in using the camera on a tripod. Yesturday it happened again. The first time it happened Canon said that they would fix it this time "complimentary" but that it is not covered by their warranty. So this time I'm screwed and must fix it myself which will void the warranty (according to Canon).

I am VERY disappointed in Canon and cannot bring myself to speak anything good of thier service. However, the camera, I love. Along with the 10d it has allowed for better quality and options for my clients.

I think this problem is a disign flaw and Canon did not beef up the socket to account for the weight of the camera.

Are you using any kind of quick release system?

And do you frequently take the camera on and off the tripod? If so, are you manually screwing the tripod into the camera?

That sure doesn't sound like a good thing to me, and I know I'd be upset, too.

I use the Bogen 3030 head with the quick release plate. I don't think I over use the tripod socket by any means. I probably take it on and off about twice a day, on average. I am very careful to make sure the screw is as far as it can go into the camera before tightening the lock nut.

I have engineered a plate that is screwed to the bottom of the camera made out of aircraft alluminim(sp). If any one wants one or wants a pic of it let me know. It would probably cost about 15.00 to have one made here at my local machine shop.
