Obviously we're based in NZ - just wanted to hear from other people as to where their camera's and equipment in insured. We currently have all our stuff as named items on our contents policy but I wondered if there was proper photographic insurers out there?
Also with planning some upcoming travel - most standard travel insurances only cover for $2500 of camera and electronic equipment which is nowhere near enough. :)
Your thoughts and advice.

Thanks for reminding me, we changed insurers recently & the new insurance co wanted a valuation of my gear.

My insurance is on the contents... As I'll be doing some paid work coming up, it's time to start looking for a broker.. Tim has a contact for a good one apparently. ;)
momentz: off topic, but how is the new lens going?
I was interested in that lens as an in between, and when my Sigma 120-300 was too heavy. Also with the macro, need to see how good it is, and how close to a subject you can go, especially with the close up filters or extension tubes...
My gear NZ new is about $15,000 including accessories..
Latest bought was the Kata 702 and 704 waterproof bags bought a week ago Friday.

Hmmm... well with the recent auckland weather I think we've taken a grand total of 10 shots with the new lens? Hopefully this weekend we'll be about to get out and about a bit more.
The min focussing distance is about 1m. Feel free to lend tubes/tc's and I'll carry out further testing, all in the name of science etc :P

I've got all my stuff names on the house policy as well. I've asked they make sure its covered for everything, which they have done. I asked her if they'd pay out if i dropped it off a cliff whilst abseiling a waterfall in the southisland, she said yes.
Good 'nuff for me!
Also, for the valuation, I just sent in all the origional retail recipts for the gear. Which adds to $5k or something.
Yo momentz - sorry I havn't said hi before, but the kiwi crew here are growing faster than our rates!

Our insurance company didnt ask for valuations.... i dont have receipts for some of our things as we bought them privately. Should I be gettng a valuation anyway>? They told me that they would do that if and when I made a claim

well i would get one done. I know that my valuation was a lot higher than the insurance company would have given it.

I've been travelling a fair bit this year, and looked into this question. You should find that the cover is max $2500 per item. I asked this specific question, and had it confirmed that other items - e.g lenses - each have that limit. Best thing to do is ask that question yourself, explaining that the gear will be in one bag. Take a look at Flybuys ins on the net (flybuys.co.nz) and Southern Cross Ins.

I'm pretty sure its not PER item... i think that's total.

Hmm, I need to look at travel insurance too. Don't you get some sort of coverage when you pay for the flights with your credit card?

Did you ask? We questioned that initially. Mike Henry said to specify the items. Fly Buys stated it was per item. Again, you need to ask. Don't assume anything.

If you have the Gold card option with most of the credit card varieties. Wazza may know ;) ,working in a bank.

I used to work in a bank..
With Westpac, and likely the other banks... Gold card is for people on a higher income, or just stupid and got themselves into more than $7500 in debt. There's a higher yearly fee, likely to be about $100-200 rather than $25/30 for a standard card, and about 55/60 for a Low Interest plan. The insurance covers basic stuff, without having to even organise cover, you're automatically covered if you're purchased most your travel including tickets on the card itself.

I asked my insurance company (via ASB Bank) -- as Iain mentions, it is up to a maximum of $2500 PER item and not for the whole lot. Anything over $2500 has to be declared, i.e, make, model, serial no., etc. so that it is in their records.
Jewelry needs to be appraised and certified by an accredited jeweller. Blah, blah, blah ;-)
