Hi everyone! This is my first attempt at a macro photo. Actually this is my first post on any photography forum. I just purchased a Canon Rebel XT and I am just starting to learn.

I have the 18-55 MM lens that came with the camera.
Take a look and let me know what you think.

Cool shot. Not "technically" macro, but I like it. The contrast of colors is awesome!

LOL.. Ok so maybe I am a newbie to this.. Why would this not be considered a macro? What would you need to make it a macro?

Good question (and we're all newbs sometime... it's nothing to be ashamed of ;))

A technical "Macro" shot has the subject the same size in real life as on the sensor (thus being 1:1).

What this technobabble means is if your camera's sensor was 22.7mm by 15.1mm, then a rectangle with sides 22.7mm and 15.1mm would fill up the entire screen.

More simply, is a bug is 22.7mm long, it would stretch across the entire sensor (and thus the entire image) from end to end.

The 18-55mm kit lens does not focus down to 1:1, so the shots aren't technically macro. However, that shouldn't deter you from shooting and posting. Not everyone can or wants to afford a dedicated macro lens. I didn't have one for months while shooting macro photography. I just wanted to make you aware; not to discourage you.

You're doing a great job. keep up the good work!

Welcome to p.o.t.n, Canon DSLRs and the macro section. Whilst technically it isn't macro due to AB's reasonings, it's good enough for me :) Nice shot, and considering it's your first effort, even more impressive.
