i have a 10d. i plan on buying photoshop 8 in the future. form what i have seen on this forum, photoshop is a very cryptic program designed for the professionals. i would like to read some books on how to use photoshop before i make the purchase. i prefer step by step or "cookbook" style. cost of the material is no option only useful substance is. thank you in advance for your consideration in this matter.

Here's a recommendation from the heart:
Buy Photoshop Elements. It's designed for non-professional users, is dramatically less expensive, yet incorporates most of the important functions of the full version (layers, levels, curves, etc.). It also has a number of automated functions that aren't available in Photoshop. Once you've gotten a good handle on it, buy the full version. You'll have to 'un-learn' very little, and your files will be 100% compatible.

On the other hand, if you’re going to be shooting RAW and don’t yet have a way of converting your files to TIFF, then I’d skip Elements and go straight for the full version. The Adobe ‘Classroom in a Book’ series is pretty good for learning the basics. I’m sure they have one for Photoshop CS (8.0) --- the books usually beat the product to market.

No need to buy Elements. It comes packaged with the 10D. :)

If you do a search in Amazon.com for "Photoshop CS", you'll get quite a few hits. I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for among those books.

Happy hunting. :)

PhotoShop Cannot be beat.
Initial investment of time and money is there, but once you know the PS Road, life is pleasant.
Is PS 8 now called by something else?

I looked at the PS books by scott kelby for PS 7.0 and was very impressed. He writes for the Photographer not the graphic artist. It was so close to the CS release I decided to wait for the CS version due out mid December

I read 'Photoshop 6 Down & Dirty Tricks' by Scott Kelby and was so impressed that I bought 'Down & Dirty 7' when Scott brought it out. However, the best book I have found to date re PS and digital photography is 'The Photoshop book for Digital Photographers' again by Scott Kelby. It really should be taken as the 10D users guide to their darkroom (ie PS)

On the DP Review forum there are people discussing the fact that they used the included 10D element password for an upgrade to CS for the cost of $299. Not bad to get into the full version & the raw handling is great!!!

Just to back Daves comments the book ( 'The Photoshop book for Digital Photographers' ) is great and he has a CS version due in December, I've already have a order in with Buy.com. Another decent book is Photoshop Restoration & Retouching 2 by Katrin Eismann as everybody knows there is always more than one way to accomplish a task in PS it's just seeing whats right for you. the two books I've mentioned gives # of where to start to get certain jobs done.

I bought one of Scott Kelby's Photoshop retouching books a year ago and I thought it was great. Since then, I've come across Katrin Eismann's Photoshop Restoration & Retouching, Second Edition, as mentioned by Vegas Poboy, and feel that her techniques are very much superior to Kelby's. It's not that Kelby's techniques didn't work but that Eismann's techniques were smarter.

For example, to handle underexposed images Kelby suggests duplicating layers and setting the blend mode to Screen. This works, but Eismann uses a Curves adustment layer set to Screen, instead. Both techniques work, but Eismann's is much more space efficient because it uses an adustment layer instead of duplicating the entire image data. To me, that difference really differentiates Eismann from Kelby.

The video guide on disk 2 which comes with Photoshop CS is supposed to be pretty good to get you started.

Cheers

Not on PS8, but Martin Evening's Adobe Photoshop 7.0 for Photographers (Focal Press) is excellent. It also includes a CD with very good little tutorials.
