The other day my Rebel stopped working midway through a shot using the timer function. But the readout still functions, I can scan previously taken images, adjust settings and preferences – everything seems to work, except for the button, the plain-old picture-takin' button (for lack of a better word). It doesn't respond at all, doesn't activate the focus when pressed halfway or do anything when pressed all the way.

I'm a new owner, the camera is only a few months old, so enlighten me if this smacks of something obvious. But my only theory is heat; the camera was in a room on the top floor of my house for a couple of days that got quite hot and stuffy. Is there any validity to this theory?

You can try a reset. Remove the batteries...replace...try again. If it still does nothing, there is a possibility that either the shutter or the shutter release button have failed. The latter options will require a trip to Canon. Try the reset and hope for the best.

Thanks, Woolburr. I'll see what I see when I get home from work and try it out.

In the meantime, what is the temperature range it should be safe in? I know the suggested range to keep within for my Mac, but could not find anything specific in the Canon manual.

The manual of the 350D (page 161) says the working temperature range should be 0-40°C, and the working humidity should be 85% or less. I'd expect the temperature range to be conservative, but I don't know about the humidity.
