Uhm, see me twisting my toe into the ground, Meaty0, would you be so kind as to copy your bridge definitions over to this thread. It might be helpful for new visitors to see, yeah that's it cause us regulars have it memorized. Thank you ever so much.:)

Hey guys - fantastic show last week - you all did a terrific job.

Unfortunately, I was in the middle of moving and had no internet access. I am now in my new location (it's easy, Sari, really!) but only have dialup until the broadband is connected (about 2 more weeks before they extract digit) so participation in threads that include pictures is limited for now.

Good luck with this weeks challenge - I will try to participate and look forward to all of your results!

Thanks Meaty0 for posting the list of definitions and Beth for reposting in this thread. Now to find an interesting angle and decide which bridge to shoot. Think more caffine is in order to help out the situation.:)

Man, bridges ... sheesh.

Here two 'efforts'. First one shows a guy taking a long run up but he still failed to clear it. Sad really! Second shows same bridge from underneath. We got better bridges than this around here, but I have already shot them and not too inspired by doing more of the same again :-)

Condyk -- Liked your comment about the long run up. It made me imagine the man splatted against the bridge like the coyote in Road Runner cartoons.

I didn't get to play last weekend because of family responsibilities. I didn't intend to play this weekend because the subject "Bridges" doesn't appeal to me.

But we got a break in the weather. It went from 98F plus high humidity to low 80's with low humidity. My husband & I decided to go out to enjoy the weather. We dropped by the living history reenactors to hear their stories. While listening, it occurred to me that the reenactors' purpose was to be a sort of bridge between the past and the present. So here is my first post. Don't know whether I'll post another tomorrow.

Ok, here are my two pictures. I was off work early today, so I took a sight seeing tour by boat in the canals of Göteborg. The city center from the old days was where the city began and had a big wall surrounding it along with a canal. There were bridges to get over the canal and the surrounding areas. The shot shows some of the bridges we went under.

The second shot I took during the high jump final. Swedish athlete Kajsa Bergqvist is jumping and I'm gonna be bold and say she's jumping over a "bridge". ;) Oh yeah, and she only took bronze. :(

great shots so far. I'm about to take a break and go get my shots.. As of now i'm ready to go.. All I have left is to raid my cousin's basement for pots/pans/dishes.. Steal his extra microwave.. grab the t.v. i'm going to pay for 'later'... and go tell my storage i'm moving out... it looks crazy all of my stuff piled up some in boxes some in rubbermaids I just took down my curtains that go with my comforter set.. Abby is helping but wants to know exactly what day i'm going to be back and can she make up a list of everything she wants to do with me when I do come back... Little stinker already making me feel guilty and I haven't even left. okay.. starting to feel depressed it's definately time to go shooting..

Condyk... I feel the same way about today's efforts... so I'm gonna wait and see if I can come up with a few more shots tomorrow.

Babara... like your take on the theme. Nice shot.

Claire... Love that first shot of yours!!! Just beautiful!

And Sari... you gotta get that little Abby emailing!!!! If nothing else, so you can send her pics of your new place and, gasp, shots of yourself so she won't miss you so much. :)

Condyke: I like your first picture with the man running...makes me tired just looking at him. Interesting perspective on your second shot. I can't tell if those are lights along the edge, or if they are holes with sun shining through. The 'texture' of the ceiling (?) is neat.

Barbara: Great capture. The bokeh is beautiful, and your subject is fascinating. I thought about a 'bridging the gap' theme as well, but couldn't get any of my ideas to work like I wanted them to. I really like your take on it.

Claire: I love the feel of your first shot, going under the bridges. :) Excellent capture on that second shot, wow. Beautiful.

Becca: Of the two, I like the first one more, but I like them both. I really like the angles in the first one, and the colors in the second one. Well done.

My first shot is looking through the drainage holes that go along the bottom of an old rock bridge.
My second shot is actually a overpass on I-15. You can see a bit of the red Utah mountains in the background.

Great pics, people! Well I managed to get a bridge picture today. This one is known as the John Gordon Walk and it connects the northern shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra to Aspen Island (where the National Carillion is situated). It is all stainless steel and very reflective. I hope you can get some sort of view of it from this picture:

I have it set on 'pattern' for the metering. Still learning on that part.
I didn't use a tripod for the shots I took this weekend. There was enough sunlight to be able to get some fast shutter speeds. (It was devestatingly HOT today. whew!)

I would love to see some of your covered bridge shots. :) Let me know when you take them, and where you post them.

Hehe, the engineer in me loves that second one, Paul :D
Great stuff! One of my old uni flatmates was a civil engineer .. he'd be even more impressed!

Well, I'm a bit annoyed with myself today. There's an old wooden bridge over a (dry) creek that I drive over on the way to work, and I went out there this afternoon with the intention of getting underneath it for a couple of shots, but there's just no way I could get down there. Bugger. I should have checked it out earlier :( I couldn't find an even remotely interesting angle to photograph it from, so I left in disgust. Unfortunately it's about the only interesting bridge that I know of around here :(

The best I could do is a "Bridge between man and god" on the way home:

Terrific shots, everyone!

condyk - What was he trying to clear? The railing? I can't imagine him trying to clear the bridge unless he has a superman complex (and he's missing his cape!)

Barbara - Great shot and interpretation of the theme this week. Love it!

Claire - That second shot is really impressive! Great action shot!

Kiwibloke - Perfect composition for that one! Nice shot.

MeatyO - I love the Captian Cook bridge shot. I've never heard of "tritone" before but I like it!

Beth - The b/w one is great! I don't do conversions well, so I'm always impressed when I see it done so nicely!

Mumbles - Where were you when you took those shots? I didn't think there was a way to get out on that bridge on foot. They're great! I love that bridge!

Cat - Love your second shot. That's a cool bridge. Very arty!

Alex - Nice job! Welcome to the challenge!

Terri - Beautiful covered bridge! I like the perspective in the first shot.

Mat - Not only a beautiful image, but one of the best HDR conversions I've seen. Nice job!

I went for a long drive upstate yestersay and kept seeing wonderful shots of bridges to take, but was on a 3 lane highway going 80 with huge distances between exits and folks waiting for me...it bummed me out but I have decided to take another road trip in that general direction just to shoot sometime soon.

OK, so when I was in town this am I took some nice shots of litle foot bridges in the park with the fountain behind them, there were nice, not great but nice...good for me...put it that way....LOL

I stopped by the office and took a quick shot of a "removable bridge with my little point and shoot I leave there for quicky shots (doesnt scare the pt as much as my "big contraption" that I like to use for good shots).

I get home and start cleaning and weeding out my park shots. about done and go to delete the ones I dont want. and end up deleting ALL of them. And I had already deleted my flash card...

SOOOO...all I have is my "removable bridge"...sorry....

OK so this "removable bridge" more commonly known as a "partial" or "denture" is a little gross, especially when you consider that the guy had been wearing it like this for YEARS (and yes he was married, YUK!) Anyway, I had to TALK him into a new one since he thought that this one was still perfectly fine and working great!....LOL anyway, so here it is....

http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/87893459-L.jpg

I knew I was hanging onto that bridge for a good reason...I have had it for a number of years as a wierd sort of curiosity thing, and now I get to show it to a bunch of people who probably really dont want to see it....LOL

Beth: What a beautiful park. I love your viewpoint in the first shot. Your second picture is gorgeous. The black and white enhances that shot perfectly.

KB: That definitely is an interesting bridge, and you captured it perfectly. Well done.

Terri: You already know how I feel about your covered bridge. ;)

MeatyO: I love all three of your pictures, the first one is stunning. But that third one! WOW. I can't stop looking at it. Simply breathtaking.

Matt: Beautiful. Just beautiful. The shot, the idea, the HDR, all of it.

Mumbles: I love night shots of bridges. Well done on these two. The colors are magnificent. Do you use a star filter? Love it.

Crissa: perfect DOF, and an AWESOME subject for the bridge. :) Very creative, and well done! Of the two, I prefer the angle of the first one.

SuperD: When the subject for the WWPday was decided, my hubby said, "I betcha SuperDiver will post a dental bridge". You came through on that one, didnt ya? LOL.
I'd like to say 'nice shot' but, um....well, it's teeth. Used ones. Ick. :p

Such great shots this weekend that I'm embarrassed to put this up. Been at the office all weekend prepping for classes and forgot that I could have used the IMAC to shoot and maybe would have even gotten something halfway in focus. Here's my bridge- kinda- as reflected in a 112 yr old mirror. The sepia treatment seemed appropriate to the time and to try to hide some of the imperfections in the mirror.

Condyke - I'm huff'n and puff'n with that runner, I hope he didn't bonk his head when he didn't clear the bridge.:) I'm fasicinated with the underside of bridges, they can house some interesting critters, sometimes.

Cat - Did you order your tubes today? Nice compromise, using that big tube for #1. #2 is a cool bridge, I like the art work and matching the color to nature.

Barbara - Nice interpretation. Reeactments offer such a shooting opportunity.

Claire - Nice artestry in both takes. The continued design in #1 and the capturing the synchronization of all the body parts in #2.

Becca - Both shots hold their own, I can understand the difficulty in deciding which you like better.

Beth - I really like how the stream moves you around #1 and nice B&W conversion in #2.

KB - That bridge is a piece of art, I can imagine it is/will be photographed a lot.

Alex - Welcome very nice start. This forum will get you out shooting, a lot, which is one of the best ways to fine tune your skills. It is also full of tips and techniques.

Terri - Ahhh, my favorite type of bridge, I can hear the clip clop of a horse pulling a buggy over the boards.

Meaty0 - #1 & 3, refer to my comment regarding the underside of bridges to Condyke. #2, did they study under M.C. Escher?!?!:D

Mat - I love that church, is it still active?

Mumbles - That is a beautiful capture of gorgeous architecture. There is a similar suspension in Milwaukee, wonder if it is the same designer/firm?

Crissa - 80???   Nice angles and DOF. Looks like a beautiful instrument, do you play?

SuperD - You remind me of the stories my mother brought home, she is a retired dental assistent. Wonder how long it took your patient to get this partial, originally, if he thought this was perfectly fine.

OK, so after shooting several bridges and angles in our local park, being limited to two, here is my entry. Let me add, and yes I took a pictue of it, there is a sign on one of the towers, "Capacity, 45 people spaced at 4 foot intervals", I need to do some research, cause I don't think this is 180 feet long.

Did you walk across it?

Often, it is part of the walk loop Curtis N and I take when we take an evening walk. I should research it, I moved here in 1968 and it looked about the same then as it does now. I seem to remember it was closed off for awhile, back during my Air Force days. But they, replaced the cables and boards at some point and re-opened it.

Great photos everyone ... I've enjoyed this week's challenge again. I'm over my cranky mood from yesterday now :D

Seems there are some very cool bridges around! ... though I have to say that those teeth are truly disgusting!

Alex: Welcome! I hope you enjoy your time here :)

Thanks for the comments on my shot.
Becky: I think it is still in service, though I'm not normally out that way on a Sunday morning to be sure. I've been wanting to get a decent photo of it for a long time, but haven't been out there at the right time on the right day. I'll wait for a day when we have a bit of cloud around to get a better sunset and give it another go I think.

Cheers,
Mat.

8am... went and picked up my uniform.. my friends moved me in and left about an hour and a half ago... I'm sitting her too tired to move but think that I need to go put the kitchen together... which is kind of entertaining considering I DON'T COOK but, still felt like I needed the pots and pans and dishes... .. but everything else was pretty much uneventful.. WOW! For the second week in a row by the time I get around to PPing my shots and posting there are just too many shots to comment on. I will say that Paul's second bridge really stuck out to me the most while looking through the images but otherwise it would be easiest to just say that all shots have been great.

To Alex (OpticNein) welcome and keep posting. As Beth pointed out the reason behind this is to get out and shoot. By participating you will see your results improve, not that your first series was bad as I quite like your second shot, and it is just a lot of fun participating.

For my shots this week i tried to figure out where I could find a nice bridge that wasn't so urban and blah. I thought about shooting some bridges that are in a fairly new shopping center and as I was investigating I saw a bridge in a park nearby that caught my eye. My daughter and I decided to venture down to the park and go for a stroll. Here is the shot I liked best of the bridge.

101992

Then I tried to figure out how I could interperate the theme differently and then it finally dawned on me "YOU LIVE IN A TOWN CALLED HEMBY BRIDGE!" I couldn't believe that it had completely skipped my mind so I started thinking about which sign I should shoot (yeah this would have worked last week too). The standard green city limits sign was too boring and I wanted to shoot the nice Welcome to Hemby Bridge sign but there are a bunch of political signs in front of it. The barber shop sign is faded so bad you can hardly read it but wait, aha the elementary school sign.

Actually it should be pretty close to 180 feet. I counted the verticle bars which should be 8 feet apart and they add up to 180 feet...give or take a few feet....LOL

Wow! There are a ton of really neat shots here. In2Photos is right. There were so many great ones here I'm afraid I'd leave somebody out if I tried to single them out for commentary.

Living where I do, near Puget Sound (Seattle-Tacoma area), there are bridges everywhere. Floating bridges, suspension bridges (Tacoma Narrows under construction), old bridges and new -- I hardly knew where to start. So. . . I started thinking about uncommon bridges.

1. A Long Way to the Bridge. This is my four year old's toy ukelele. I don't usually do black and white, but this seemed like a good opportunity to play with it.

http://dbberg.googlepages.com/longwaytothebridge.jpg

2. Seven Year Old Bridge. My oldest son just finished a week of gymnastics camp at the YMCA, and has been quite eager to show off everything he learned.

Hey, isn't that where a suspension bridge collapsed some years ago? I seem to recall the name from my university days - constructive resonance from wind which basically tore the bridge apart?

You got it. The old bridge (in the 40s) was nicknamed "Gallopin' Gertie" because of the way it used to rock and twist when the wind picked up. The design basically acted like an airplane wing, and when the wind came rushing through the Narrows (the channel the bridge spans), it tried to take flight. Made for some great film, and usually makes most mentions of great engineering disasters. :D

After posting the thought occurred to me to find out the distance between the verticles, 8 ft huh, then you are right and I stand corrected. So much for me eyeballing in distance.:)

Sari - Congratulations on your new home, hopefully you'll get settled in quite quickly. I really like the shadow and arch in #1. #2 is just plain fun, your niece certainly is enjoying herself.

Mike - Pretty little foot bridge and setting, nice save on #2, you're correct, it is a natural take on the theme.

Ibdb - Nice conversion and shot on #1. Cute one of your son. At some point in the past, I could do that, makes me hurt to even think about it now.

Oblio - I like the sculptures on the first bridge and nice angle on #2 gives it an abstract feel.

Hehe, no, he doesn't have access to my photography room. That room is very deliberately cat-proof :)
He's just been very attention-seeking lately for some reason.

Yeah, got the 400mm out to take a few photos of birds, but spent about two hours and got nothing. Came home and set the tripod up on the back verandah, hoping there might be some parrots in some big pine trees not far away (there often are) - but still saw nothing - possibly because the cat was cruising around near them. He's not very well camouflaged :)

Thought I might as well get a photo of -something-, so I snapped that one.

We could expand from pets to domesticated animals, then they wouldn't have to ours, could be a friends, a neighbors, cows in a field, etc. Or we could do mode of transportation. Hmmmm, if we do that do I get my car washed, or would the mud splatters make for an interesting composition.:D

Man ... pets is very boring. I see my pets every day and so there is no big thrill taking a shot of them. I'm also not interested in other people's pets. They are like other peoples kids. Who cares?

As to my regular transport, well I normally walk around given I live close to the city centre. I haven't even seen my car for around 6-7 weeks. It is in the underground car-park ... unless someone has stolen it

So, nah, I don't fancy either idea. I want to get out shooting and I want at least a bit of a challenge, but if others want to go for one or other idea then I will go along with it.

How about uncovered, or revealed?

Or how about something we have to walk or dirve to to to find? Maybe something at a specific distance, like 20 minute walk from a certain point or 20 mile drive from a certain point...??

I'm stumped at the moment for uncovered or revealed, doesn't mean I won't think of something by the weekend though.

I rather like the 20 minute idea...personally I wouldn't know exactly what might be 20 minutes in any particular direction. Would be interesting to find out and photograph. Since we get two photos, we could go in 2 directions, walking would be 40 minutes of excercise so it would be healthy too.:D

tommykjensen

Well 20 minutes gets you to different places depending how you travel: horse, bike, walk, run, drive, bus, train, etc. So if you're not willing to get a pet for this next theme you could at least be willing to change mode of transport and/or route :p

here's my suggestion, my $0.02 contribution...

let's make the rules strict... 20 minutes by walking to any direction from the gate of your house or from the lobby of your apartment. After 20 minutes, you stop exactly where you are and can take pictures in any direction but you cannot take any further steps. you take your pictures from where you are. you can sit, crouch, stand but you cannot take any further steps at that point.

this will be challenging and will force us to be creative from where we are, who we shoot, how we utilize the lens and perspective that we have. Are we going to telephoto around us? or are we going take macro shots of points of interest around our feet? are we going to shoot pictures of events, vehicles, or people going by past us? or are we going to focus on a fixed subject?

this should equalize the experienced and inexperienced. are we really limited to 2? or can we raise it to 4?

what does everyone think?

cfpackerfan

hi Cat. Friday is fast approaching. we need to have a concensus soon on what our weekend challenge would be. is this an every weekend thingy? how often is the worldwide photo day challenge anyway? ugh! i don't know!

last year in b&w photography classes, me and two of my classmates went to a cemetery and took pictures for 2 hours. i was actually worried that our pictures might look generic and similar on critique day. but during critique day the three of has had so much diverse point of views that to my surprise the rest of the class thought that the pictures were taken at different places!

taking digital dslr pictures has been extremely challenging and frustrating to me for the past 18 days (it's the length of time i've had my rebel xt). my approach has to be different since i've been comfortable with taking b&w film pictures. so much to take into consideration but it's still fun.

the challenges were started by me about six months ago and is showing no signs of slowing down.. anyone is allowed to comment and choose a theme.. I generally go with whatever is the most popular or has the best response from.. there are a few rules but there more of guidelines.. working within the time given and having a theme as a jumping off place every and all interpretations are welcome.. glad your joining us it looks like this theme is going to be a twenty minute walk from home..

A couple comments.

First about strict rules. The photoday has always had very relxed rules to leave lots of room for each to interpret the theme wide. This is because the original idea was to get people out shooting more.

As for number of photos. Keep this at 2 photos per person. Again the rules is not strict so if you have 1 extra photo you want to post its ok (just don't do it every time). Several of us have done that once in a while. But try to limit to 2.

The most strict rules in this challenge is the forum rules. Which means the photos can max be 800x800 pixels. If it is bigger then a link should be posted.

Hmmmm... This could be very interesting! I'm going to be running out-of-town relatives all over the state this weekend, so I guess I could stop the car on one of those trips 20 minutes from home. Sounds like fun!

It's looking like I'm gonna have to work all weekend... :( Maybe I just need to be very creative.... :)

Arrgh, dial-up since 8/1....I cannot even see any pix, let alone participate. O well, I am having a blast . I captured some great bridges without even knowing the challenge. :)

Keep it going y'all...The shots are always worth while and wonderful..

I checked the page with the weekend chaallenges on it and this challenge is not on there yet. Have we decided for sure what the challenge will be?

I think for sure it will be 20 minutes from home, by any type of travel.

Becky, I could swap the clothes, but after using them for a few days I decided to skip it. The pants had been worn in and heck, the day they look good on me I'll know I've lost weight! LOL

Had a nice time watching the games but the end party was the best part (as you can tell by my Mon thread in the general forum... ;) )

Sari, not that we aren't great company, but you should go & make new friends at your new place.
