Please give the name of the author, there is plenty of books out there with that general title. If you're looking for a book one that I've found to be good with the basic principles is Kodaks 35mm guide to Photography and Ansel Adams (Basic Techniques of Photography I). The both of them covers a great deal of the basics.

An excellent book on proper exposure is: The Confused Photographer's Guide to the Zone System ", by Farzad. It makes Ansel Adams work very clear and simple to use. It also introduces you to the concept of tones and tonal ranges. It's available at Amazon.com

Langford's Basic Photography was the only text book we were REQUIRED to buy when I went through college years ago. Despite the title it is a very comprehensive book, covering just about everything you could need to know about technical side of photography. I've no idea how it handles the digital side of things, but there's plenty to learn about light, optics, exposure, etc., regardless of the cpture medium.

BTW, the link seems to be a different book, not Langford's.

Try this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0240512561/qid=1068930797/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_8/002-8889089-5224859?v=glance&s=books

I have an awesome book. It covers everything from the very basics of photography through to very in depth and professional approaches. It's not strictly for digital - but it covers all photographic principles, which will apply for digital cameras, and has some sections about digital imagery.

Go here to check it out:
