Someone please correct me if i'm wrong on this, but last night i did a test shooting RAW with my parameters set to standard. i then performed the same shot with my parameters modifed to full (i.e. full sharpness etc.) i noticed a considerable difference in sharpness.

is this normal? i thought that RAW did not apply any parameters to any shot at all? Did i mis-understand the manual.

Not that this is a problem, just thought that RAW was un-effected by the parameters.

I just changed my parameters aswell,
I have contrast on normal
sharpness on full
saturation on normal
color tone on full

is that ok, i do not shoot on RAW!

The RAW data is the data that the sensor recorded, without the parameters applied. But if you convert the RAW data to a displayable image (TIFF or JPEG) with Canon's file viewer utility, the file viewer utility applies the parameters, so you will see a difference. You can also choose to use different settings in than what you set in the camera (see the manual of the file viewer utility).

Flootje, if you shoot JPEG, the camera applies the settings and you cannot change them afterwards with File Viewer Utility.

Are you asking if this combination of settings is OK? If it looks good to you, it's OK for you....

jesper,

i assume then, that the lcd panel on the camera will reflect those parameter changes as well?

I don't think it will??? but I coud be wrong. The LCD may be displaying the embedded jpeg.. in which case the jpeg embedded in the RAW image WOULD have the parameters applied....

But what jesper says is definately correct. The raw data is recorded,. and the camera parameters are also recoded,. but the parameters are only applied to the converted image IF you choose to apply them (leave the Utility settings at default)

Personally I think the LCD is not of high enough quality to check sharpness, contrast or saturation - and I would certainly not recommend it ever be used in this way. It is only useful for checking composition and focus, unless the histogram is used then it is also good for exposure.

Richard (the Sane):

I also only use the LCD for changing menu items and viewing the histogram. Since the bulk of my shooting is outdoors anyway, the thing's too darned hard to see. Even if I could, it's of little value other than to confirm that I got some kind of picture, the quality of which remains very much in doubt until I can see it on my monitor.

I'd agree.

I've had some wonderful shots on the LCD only to get home to find them way out of focus. :)

LCD is to check composition and also to view histo for exposure. Only by zooming can you get a rough idea if focus is good IMHO.

It's also very useful for quickly spotting blown out highlights.
