on auto mode when the sky is close to dark or when the sky is dark when i use flash to take a picture of someone the background becomes really dark but the person is in the light. I am wonder on how to fix it ive been reading around and changing setting under P but still have a similar problem. On my sony cybershot camera i can see the background+ person in the light when using flash. thanks alot for the help

Hello s2canonrex
1. the best of all you'll forget, that auto mode exists ;)
2. in such scenes try to use either Night Scene or SCN (Special Scene)/Night Snapshot - settings. For details pls. read your manual or see here (http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/pss3is/201-e.html). For night scenes in general is the using of tripod recommended.

Maybe the Sony has a stronger flash? or maybe the background was nearer when you were using the Sony?
Try bigger apertures and/or slower speeds, and up the ISO, 100 seems OK, more and I get noise.
