Since you already have a computer I would suggest Digital. You will save on processing and get instant results for feedback and editing.

Things to look for;

Zoom lens, aids in cropping and composition.

A good book on Photography, An author to look for in the bookstores, John Hedgecoe. Stay away from any books that ends with the phrase "...for Dummies."

Take some classes

Post your work on chat boards and forget about the WOW I LOVE IT responses and the DUDE THIS SUCKS responses. Look for the responses that offer good suggestions that will improve your work. They are the only ones that matter.

And finally, start to look at the world around with a fresh eye. Even those places that you could walk through blindfolded. See the shapes, lines, shadows and highlights on everything around you. Notice how the light falls on everything and mood it gives. When you start to do this then you are really a photographer and the camera is nothing more than a tool.

Look into Canons "A" series or maybe "G" series at the higher end.

Olympus has some nice ones.. if you want a long zoom look at Olympus' "C700" series.

Also Fuji just came out with a fantastic camera that last year would have sold for $800.00 or more but they are asking about $500.00 for it.

I have the A70, and it's a good hobby camera. Look into the latest release the A80.

No mater what model, I would recommend you get a model that allows you full control over the picture. So you can set exactly the focus, shutter speed, and aperture, and not rely on the camera to pick one for you.

As you progress in experience, you want a camera that will continue to provide you with the control you need.
