My first ever GBH, second heron in general, and I got sooo lucky with this shot!! I had been watching this him/her across the pond for at least half an hour, it was too far for any photos with my 70-200. My husband was getting antsy and just when I thought we might as well leave the heron took pity on me and took off. It came directly towards me and landed only feet away!!! One lucky shot before it was out of sight again :) :D

I would think the heron would be so easy for you, after all those little bitty hummers!
Lovely light on the GBH - very nice all around!

Lol, if the biggest bird you ever had flying toward you had a 4-5 inch wingspan and you were now aiming at a bird with a, what?, more than 5 foot wingspan, you'd feel a bit overwhelmed too ;) .
I just wish I hadn't forgotten that the camera was still set to f4, hummer setting  .

A very nice capture, clear and well exposed. Your patience paid off.

Nice shot Bea of the heron. Nice spread of the wing as it takes off.

Thank you Dennis and Tony, I always appreciate your kind words :)

Tony, this shot was the landing, take-off was out of reach for my lens. The heron came to a standstill out of sight behind reeds. Talk about a window of opportunity :D

Thank you so much! You won't believe it, I just recently found this huge wild life sanctuary literally 5 minutes by car from where I live. It is beautiful! How could I not know about this for all these years?!? I just about died when I went there and saw what I had been missing. Just glad the birds cooperated, like this GBH. What on earth made him decide to fly towards me? I came away so excited I couldn't sleep that night, really!

Thanks Sindri, it was all pure luck :) :D Now I have to go out and get some skills (and a long lens!)
