this doesn't really work for me.. it's too dark around the eyes and the tight crop looks more accidental than composed..

it's pretty dark. I can't see his eyes. Maybe a little PP will help...

I like the b&w a lot. Would love to see a little more contrast to really bring out the wonderful lines in his face

I hope you don't mind. Some quick Highlight/Shadow and tone adjustment. Overall though, I think it's a great composition. Great feeling and depth in your grandfather!
Agreed on the B&W, more contrast for a less washed out look. Try the Channel Mixer option in CS2, select monochrome and move the sliders till you get the desired effect!

Flip the camera vertically when shooting close up portraits. It will get rid of the dead space on both sides of his head.

It's tons of fun, especially taking photos of the elderly. There's something about wrinkles and other imperfections that make portraits look so much better to me. That last edit makes it look great. Watch your white balance when you're shooting.

I had PS7 - Dont remember if it had the same highlight adjustment...
