Greetings,

A few weeks back I asked if the G3 and G5 were able to open, edit and aquire RAW in Photoshop files in a manner similar to the G1 and G2. Several posts were very helpful but I never did get the answer I was looking for. I called Canon G3 technical support and actually the question stumped them too. In the end I did my own research by just "doing it" and this is what I found:

1) The USB viewer utility used by the G1 and G2 does not work with the G3 and G5.

However the USB utility that comes on the Canon CD with the G3 and G5 does work with RAW images taked with the G1 and G2. Intersting???

2) Instead canon provided the File Viewer Utility Which is very slow and not useful if you don't have all day to edit your RAW files

3) If you want the fast workflow of the USB utility for use with the G3 and G5 you need the Adobe Raw Image Converer Plugin for Photoshop or the Adobe Photoshop CS sofware. PS CS has the plugin installed natively with some additional features not found in the plug in. To open a RAW file shot with the G3 or G5 simply open the file in the File menu of CS. It is loaded with features, very fast and useful.

Hope Helps,

-Doug.
