Canon 24-70L f2.8 vs Canon 24-105 f4 L IS

The majority of my client are Asia couples. They don't have outdoor wedding. 95% in church, temple and the reception in restaurant.

I know f2.8 will be helpful for low light condition. On the other hand, IS will also help. So the question for expert wedding photographer:

Should i give up the f2.8 for the IS? how well f4 IS will perform under low light condition? Price for both lens are the same range now. I'll use it with Canon 30D for now. I'll get 5D next year.

Thanks

you could always get the new 17-55 2.8 IS.

i read it somewhere in this forum is that it would be perfect for crop camera. I will upgrade to full frame next year. Don't want to invest twice.

Do EF-S lenses fit the 10D?

i'de say it really doesn't matter which in this case. weddings are a mixture of distant shots and group shots. for groups, 16-35 would be amazing. for distant shots, 70-200IS can't be beaten. of course, you could always get a small extenstion tube and 17-55, since you won't be needing infinity anyway...

17-55 would actually be a better choice than the 24-70L since it has IS. But I think aperture is more important than IS if you had to choose... though having both is amazing.

Canon needs to make a 24-70LIS :D

For indoor use where you could use a tripod if needed I'd get the 24-70L. 24-105L has soom reach - but you are going to be stuck with using the flash or high ISO. Frankly for many of the indoor events I've shoot I've used my 16-35L. It's a very nice and light lense (the 24-105L is rather heavy). And you can get a big group of folks in the picture. 24-105L I use at events in big rooms or out doors. You really have to push it if you don't want to use the flash inside with that lense - 1/20th ISO 400 or even 800 with decent lighting. And many don't turn out even with IS...

This one actually turned out ok:

Frankly if I were going to do something as high profile and unforgiving as a wedding I'd have two cameras and at least two lenses.

Most of the pro's I've seen usually carry a shorter black L and a white L. Usually F2.8 for indoor events. Personally I'd even toy with the idea of stuffing a spare F1.4 or 1.8 50 mm in my pocket - great for that soft background effect that you see in so many wedding photos. But than maybe my high standards are why I run from anything like a wedding!

Have you thought of renting some equipment first? Especially if someone else is actually paying the bill.

One other thought – the closer you are the less chance a head will get in the way…

if you do large groups, 16-35 is probably going to be a must. if you only need 2-5 people, 24-70 should do fine. of course, with either lens you will likely want a 70-200 (or sigma's new 50-150) f2.8 as well...

I rented the 24-70 for an event back in May. I think it is an unbieveable lense. Extremely sharp and produced great colors. I found it to be (as you probably have read before) a little heavy. Why don't you rent both the 24-70 and the 16-35 and see which one you like best. If there is not a camera shop in your area that rents lenses you can always rent from PPR in Atlanta they will ship to you. (I don't have the link here just Google PPR)

thanks for all the info. I think i'll go with 24-70 because i want the ability to zoom in a bit (so i don't have to be in the guest face) :)

If you are shooting in good light you also don't need IS.
The f2.8 will give you a shallower DOF, which may be nice for wedding shots to blur out the background.

Wow, you need to upgrade yourself nicely. If you are getting money out of it, at least. You mention clients, so i'd assume so. 10D is fine, but you need a second body.

Then regardless of which lens you get, there should be a 70-200 2.8 lens or at least a fast prime like 85 1.8 or 100 2 with the wider lens or normal zoom lens.

Just to be less subtle in the point I attempted to make a few posts ago, in case you begin to re-think your decision; the 17-55 is not a candidate since it is an EF-S lens and you are using a 10D

oh no, i'm getting 30D and the lens at the same time. 10D will be retired.

This is true but, I have read that you can purchase a EF rear mount from canon for less than $10 and swap that one for the EF-S (just a few small screws) and it should function perfectly with the 10D. If interested do a search, I know I have red that on this board and Im pretty sure there were pic's to go along with it.

of the two lenses originally mentioned the 24-70 would be much better suited to wedding photography

humm...it comes down to Canon 24-70L f2.8 vs EF 16-35 f2.8

Most indoor locations - small groups standing togther - if I had to choose only one lens out of your two - 24-70L f2.8. But you are going to want more...
