Challenge #32 The Restroom

Yes, you read correctly.:D The Restroom, bathroom, john, loo, potty, etc.... But seriously, I am assuming that we all have at least one restroom in our house and have been to several that have wowed us or peaked our curiosity. I would like to see interesting shots of sinks, showers, outhouses, shaving cream, toothbrushes, or whatever you associate with the restroom.

I ask that you use good taste when posting a photo. Absolutely no pictures of anybody "going" to the bathroom.

I will judge on photo quality, composition, relevance, and creativity. This will hopefully be a fun challenge and encourage some fresh photos. Have Fun!!!

A95. Found tacked inside the door of a disused old country outhouse, taken by flash in pitch dark. Entered here just for fun, but entered there in dire emergency

Title: Do You Mind?
Camera: Canon S2IS

Setting: This is a "bathroom" in rural Ghana, West Africa. Inside is a bucket with water. You simply take your bucket bath as best you can inside the Cocoa burlap bag enclosure. It is generaly very hot and dusty and you exit almost as sweaty and dirty as you went in! Now, tell me again how bad your bathroom looks!

I apologize for the late post...late night at work. :(

Ok, I don't envy those who have to judge these challenges all the time, especially the ones where there are 2+ pages of entries. There are always great submissions.

I realize this was an unusual subject and hope that everyone enjoyed some aspect of the challenge (whether viewing or contributing). But on with it…

Here is the Top 3, and just like others have said these three were so close they could have easily been switched around

1) Chrome: shanen2179 – I keep coming back to this photo and that is a big reason why I picked it for 1st. I love the detail in the reflections of the chrome (except for the reflection of the camera). I also found the “crustys” around the faucet to be a “real” touch to the photo. The bath and body bottle in the background is also interesting to look at and ties the bathroom theme together well. I like the B&W conversion although I thought it could use a tad more contrast. A photo that is interesting to look at and beautiful.

2) The best part of waking up... NOT: Spur - The detail in this photo is wonderful and I like the background color with the colors of the razor. I thought the composition was also good. The photo felt like it needed one more thing to push it over to the next level…..like maybe a little shaving cream dripping off, etc…. But a great shot nonetheless.

3) Do you Mind?: Edd S – I always enjoy your entries, this week was no exception. Very moving/disturbing photo. It points out many of the luxuries that I get to enjoy that others don’t. Things I take for granted sometimes. I was hoping to see this type of photo this week. I thought it was done with good taste, and conveys an intriguing story. The photo quality seemed off for some reason. Not sure if it was a conversion JPEG thing. But even with that, it hardly detracts from the impact of the photograph.

O T – Good composition on your photo. It felt like a scene out of a scary movie. Enjoyed the hint of color as well. I wasn’t quite sure what the knob looking thing was at the bottom of the photo.

Hospo1 – Oh my gosh….my wife and I are still laughing at this one.:D Great entry, would have loved to see this with different composition (maybe another angle or in a different setting). Lots of potential with this subject.

ThreadHead – Great detail and B&W conversion. I like the selective color choice in this photo. A secondary subject would have added some more interest and would help to draw the viewer in more.

Teekay – Nice story to go along with the picture. I would have loved to seen the actual outhouse (if it still exists). Thank you for entering this.

Jeece – Well done composition and dof on this photo. The patterns on the wall really draw you from the paper to the back wall adding visual interest. A little color would kick up the interestingness (to steal from flickr) with all of the white going on.

Looking forward to next weeks challenge!

I agree with you... had a few shots with my hand on the handle, as if someone was trying to open the door, but the framing was too off. To get the shot I had to, umm, impose upon a construction site. Trying to keep the smokies away, it was a real shoot-and-run caper

Did you get the title?

As always, congratulations to the winners :) .Very tough subject.!

Shanen2179- I knew when I saw this photo it was going to be one of the top ones. Good reflections!

Spur- good details and colour.

Edd_S- I agree with T-Bonestahl, it was a very moving photo and educational as well.

I' sorry I couldn't enter the challenge this week. My a610 is on loan right now...

Loved the Do you Mind photo and of course the winning one. I was excited about entering this subject too but it didn't work out...

I'm glad you all enjoyed my photo "Do You Mind?" I know the quality wasn't the best. Many times when I am in Africa, I have to take a quick shot from a moving vehicle. I was a good ways away when I took it. Many pictures I take there move me greatly when I look them over agian and again. I guess it's good to be reminded just how good we really have it (especially when we get to complaining, etc.).

Thanks again for the comments.
