This mockingbird was a bit shy -- I had to catch glimpses between the branches.

#2 is really nice perch. Perhaps a little fill flash can bring out the subject more.

Very nice shots there Joe, these seem to be a bit more shy than the ones around my house. They continually attack the neighborhood cats and hawks. Usually standing on some prominent spot and fuss.

Thanks for the comments Greg, Sindri, Fee and Richard.#2 is really nice perch. Perhaps a little fill flash can bring out the subject more. You're right about that, Fee. Here are a couple of captures of the same bird with fill flash.

all shot at ISO400, f/6.3, 1/200, 300mm

Thanks Dennis, Trevor and Frank for the comments.Very nice shots there Joe, these seem to be a bit more shy than the ones around my house. They continually attack the neighborhood cats and hawks. Usually standing on some prominent spot and fuss.right, Dennis-- I usually don't find them shy. I wonder if this might be a juvenile -- didn't see a white slash on the wings.

Nice shots Joe. The flash definitely added something extra.

it does look like a young bird, but are you sure it is a mockingbird?
this is a baby I found on the ground that was already showing the white banding on the wings... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=194215

nice shots btw

I'm not sure about the ID, winkie. When I spotted this fellow in the grass I assumed it was a species new to me. It looks smaller than a mockingbird, and its chest looks white rather than silver gray.

Looked in my book of Tennessee birds -- maybe an Eastern Phoebe? If so, it's a new bird for me.

Another hide and seek bird, good series and congrats on a new bird added to your list. I have to say that this looks very much like a Eastern Phoebe to me.
