Not sure whether this is old news or not, but it wasn't to me. Someone on photocamel is saying the new Canon 1 body will be announced soon (http://www.photocamel.com/index.php/topic,13157.0.html). And the 5D is to get an upgrade, too? Apparently Canon will merge the 1DS and 1D models. This sounds very good to me if true.

most likely, but for now its still a rumor. 5d won't be updated, maybe a N version thats mostly firmware updates, but not a new model. the 30d and xt would be next

Seems like with what the other brands are bringing to the table, we're due for a "mid-size" model. Something between the 30D and 5D. Something to make the leap between the two less extreme. Something to compete with the D80 and D200, as well as the Sony Alpha and its successors. (The sony not being much of a threat, but hey)

Somehow I think Canon marches to its own drummer. Not sure the company needs to be looking strictly at what other companies are doing. It's so far out in the lead already.

I still think there should be something between the 30D and 5D. There's upper class (5D and 1-series), and lower class (30D/20D, XT). We need a middle class. Those that want more than the 30D offers, and have some cash, but don't wanna drop $3k+ on their body.

in some areas, in others it sorely lacking. competition is good for everyone, I love what Nikon has brought to their flagship model and can only hope they ocntinue to implement new technology in there future models. Canon seems to only work on the sensor and proccesor. We've been asking for tihngs since the D30 that still aren't implemented

Word!

I'd simply love a prosumer model that shot as fast as the 1d MkII

you can get a 1d2 used for the same price point that model would be at

Yeah..I've been seeing them with a few clicks for $2300 or so.

There is no doubt Canon will have to respond to the new models from their competition. I'm just looking at the drop in prices. This will be very interesting to keep tabs on. If anyone hears for sure, call me! :)

I'm praying for a 5D upgrade so the current model drops in price personally

I agree. I don't think the 30D is a big enough upgrade (at least I don't want it to be) the 1D(s) are too much of an upgrade.

I wouldn't hold your breath, its basically the newset camera on the block with no need to update

the 30d was hardly a replacement for the 20d, and the xt is getting up there for consumer time line, the 1ds is in need, and almost guranteed of update, and even the 1d2 received only a facelift last time

I wanna see a

50D (upgrade to 30D with new sensor)
6D (upgrade to 5D just so that the prices fall. maybe even weather sealing to compete with the D200)

Maybe a 1.6x crop 1-series. Amazing AF, amazing buffer, weather sealing for the masses. So finally Canon can put "L" on their EF-S lenses. Though I highly doubt that will happen.

Ronald S. Jr.: There's definitely a huge price difference between 30D and 5D, but I don't think there's a huge performance difference. I thought the 5D was essentially a 30D with a bigger sensor, no?

//edit: Also 400D to compete with the D80... the D80 is sweet IMHO.

I think Canon should come out with a 2d, 3d, 4d, 6d, 7d, 8d, 9d, 11d, 12d, 13d, 14d, 15d, 16d, 17d, 18d, 19d, 20d, 21d, 22d, 23d, 24d, 25d, 26d, 27d, 28d, and a 29d.

The only new EOS I am interested in is a 1D.
The MkII N did not compel me to upgrade from the MkII for obvious reasons,. but a MkIII or whatever they call it, with higher MP and hopefully more features would put me first in line.

I would like a combo camera, with 1.3, 1.6, and 1.0 crops.

That would be the 5D then. Crop away with you software of choice, or select some of the lower resolution offerings when taking the photos.

Considering the D200 - almost a pro body, weather sealing, a WiFi grip etc, its just better than the 30D. Perhaps this is the rumoured 3D, or something similar...

My perspective is a bit different:

Lower class = Entry Level Digital Rebel (350D/XT)
Middle Class = Prosumer models (20D/30D and the 5D as the upper end of this category)
Upper Class - 1D series (pro body and firmware)

I'm personally expecting a 1Ds Mark II upgrade to a Mark IIN or Mark III and an upgrade to the Digital Rebel Series. The 5D and the 30D are too recent of products to get upgrades.

Latest word is 18 mpix at 5fps and 10 mpix at 8-9 fps, cropped mode, all in one camera.

Canon 5D, With 5fps, Weather sealing would be very nice..but make it lower than $1,900:evil:  . As far as Canon Merging the 5D and 1 series.....wtf, I want a body that will put up with but I want something I can afford you know? $4K ok, maybe but not $8k.

I don't see Canon abandoning the dual 1D product line unless they have been able to accomplish a higher FPS and a larger buffer on the FF body. In my mind they have been proceeding on the right track with the two bodies and I would doubt we will see any significant price drop on the high end. They have a lock on this segment of the market. Who else offers a FF camera at 16.7MP, no one unless you move into medium format digital. Why would they change this and why would they want to make it more affordable. The way they have their product lines laid out now there are very good cameras available to every segment of the market. If they bring down the high end camera then everyone will want to maintain the percentage price point separation. We would end up with an XT class camera going for less than some of the point and shoot.

Heck, if they could up the buffer to 5FPS, many people would buy up the 5D. That would defintely work in their favor, if they moved for that along with some firmware upgrades.

Well, get in line, my dear. The buzz on Digital Wedding Forum is that Canon is still planning to announce the IDsMkIII during Photokina. The rumor is that it will have a variable frame rate of up to 10fps with resolution choices of 11 and 22 megapixels. Kind of like one of Nikon's more recent offerings.

I don't see a reason for a 1Ds series camera needing 10fps, unless you eliminate the whole 1D series. For a wedding photographer, 5FPS would be enough. Maybe every once in a while the 8.5 fps would be useful...

Man, that's going to cost a kidney or two.

Maybe Canon will one day make customizable dSLRs that you can order from their website. Like when you buy a Dell computer.

You can pick body material, image sensor, buffer size, onboard flash yes/no, media card type(s).....

how dreamy would that be?
