Shooting in RAW - JPG vs. TIFF

I've been shooting a lot lately in RAW mode. However, I can only get about 48 frames per 512mb cf. This is with the embedded JPG setting on large fine. When I process the RAW files I never extract the JPG file and only convert the RAW file as a TIFF.

The question here is, If I set the embedded JPG file (within the RAW shot) to the lowest small setting to allow more frames per CF, will this affect my TIFF conversions.

95% of the time I enlarge my usable shots to 13x19 using my Epson 2200 printer.

Not at all, think of it as two files in one. I use small fine just because sometimes I'll take the shot for web usage and just not bother with the tiff conversion. Small is fine for web usage, but I still have the "negative" if I need to make the adjustment. But anyway, the answer is no, setting a smaller jpeg preview will not effect your raw data at all. The tiff will be the same, including size, as it was with jpeg on large fine.

If you never use the embedded JPEG, it's best to set it to the smallest mode. It will not affect conversion of the RAW data to TIFF, since you're not using the embedded JPEG at all.

When set to ISO 100, my 10D estimates that it can put 80 photos on my 512 MB card. When I turn up the ISO, the estimate becomes lower, but I think it's still estimating that about 74 photos will fit at ISO 1600. I shot 60 photos at ISO 800 and 1600 this weekend and the card wasn't full yet.

Can the size of the embeded Jpeg be set on the rebel as well? I dont recall seeing a place to choose. ( I know it exists in the raw file but dont see a place to change it's size)

Alas! This is yet another feature Canon has opted to exclude from the Digital Rebel. According to the user's manual, in RAW mode, the embedded JPG file is fixed at Medium resolution and can't be changed.
