first of all i'd like to say sorry about my english, but i'm a hungarian :P

I'd like to buy a Canon EF 100-300 f5.6 non L version for $100.. :} What do you think about that lens? I dont know what to do, because I dont know what's the difference between the two lens.. I know, the L version is much more expensive, and they're slow :-) But can I buy the non L one? What about the image quality? :-) I'dont wanna to take pictures for the NGC, so I cant pay $1000s for a little sharpness, but please tell me if it's a crap :-) In my opinion crap = ef-s 18-55 kit obj:P

new idea! is it better to buy a sigma 55-200 DC ? :-)

additional information: i'd like to use it on a eos350d/digitalrebelxt

Is this the lens? http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=150&modelid=7339
You basically get what you pay for... Some really like this lens...

I think he means this kind:

I've never used one but I do have the old push pull 70-210 f/4 which I bought just after I got my 350d as a starter lens but I still use it now, it was surprisingly sharp. The build is ok but the focus motor sounds like a nest full of pissed off killer bees.

I have no idea what the 100-300 non l is like but if it's anything like the 70-210 it will be fairly good, especially for the money.

Yep it's the non l version, but it's not that bad really, it was a lot better than the other "starter" zoom I bought at the time, the 75-300mm III

I only paid £55 for it second hand but I sold that thing within a few months on ebay £136!

That's the only plus point I had to owning the 75-300 lol

Be aware that it is quite an old lens, so if you have any problems with it, you might find it difficult to get it repaired.

There are new lenses with a very good reputation like the Sigma 70-300 APO (http://www.digital-versand.de/start.php?d_OB1033C_Sigma_Objektiv_70_300mm_F4_0_5 _6_DG_APO_f__Canon.php) or Tamron 70-300 that are available for around 200 EUR - new with a warranty. There is also the cheaper Sigma 70-300 DL that is not as good but even cheaper.

You might check www.preistrend.de for the best prices in Germany.

Best regards,
Andy

Hi Repa,

these look good :D

Another proof that a skilled photographer can get good images if he knows how to use his stuff (stop down & use sufficient shutter speed).

Best regards,
Andy

I had the 100-300 f/4.5~5.6 but I sold it after I got my 70-200.
The build quality is good and the AF is good, but you need a lot of light to get the best from this lens.
I was constantly having problems with it beeing too slow (this was back when I was using film so things might be a little better now because of high ISO performance of DSLRs).

My point is: Don't buy this lens and think you can take good pictures of indoor sports or on dark overcast days.
