I've purchased a few books on the subject, but find the two that I most often refer to (in order of preference) are:
The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby
Digital Photographer's Handbook by Tom Ang (Note: although 'Photoshop' doesn't appear in the title, it is used extensively throughout the book) Also, this book is in hard cover --- something I wish more publishers would do for frequently used reference books.

Another book I like a lot is Photoshop 7 Artistry by Haynes & Crumpler. In some ways, this book is the most fun to read, and just possibly the most inspiring as to things that can be done with the software.)

I should point out that each of these books has strong/weak points, and are written in somewhat different styles. Hopefully there's a bookstore near you where you can browse through several titles to see which ones appeal to you.

And I'll add to the list Real World Photoshop 7 (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0321115600/qid=1069084420/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/104-6192472-6259930?v=glance&n=507846) by Blatner and Fraser.

I'm very fond of Photoshop Restoration and Retouching (second edition) by Katrin Eismann. Great step by step lessons with before and after shots. See http://www.digitalretouch.org.

My most used book is probably PhotoShop Wow. I particulary like the layout and the instruction is very clear to me. Has that extra info in the margin to refer to. Covers allot of stuff. I'm still on version 6 and hoping that one will come out for PhotoShop CS.

The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby will be coming out with an update for the new PS CS that released last week. Great book but might as well wait for the update.

Although I haven't used it yet, I've got the "Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photogrphers".

I bought it off eBay.

Scott Kelby is releasing a new book for CS and it will be released in December (The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers) CS version. Check Buy.com for info also Barnes & noble already has a WOW verison released but I was not to impressed with it.
Another good point to make is I'm sure some of the 7 books price will come down and they are alot of features that has not changed.

I just picked up Scott Kelby's "Photoshop CS Down and Dirty Tricks". It's pretty interesting. Scott is quite the comedian so it's kind of fun to read through the examples. It's very straight forward ideas with step one, step two, and so on with extra hints and ideas in the margins.

This is only for getting going on some of those special effects and really not a learning photo shop book.

A n old friend of mine wrote "Photoshop for Dummies"

Allthough I havent read this book, his past writings were clear, concise and easily followed.

I also put any Sybex book in the good category. Their authors seem to do a much better job than the others at making very readable books on most computer subjects.
