I'm guessing its to capture 3D images. Where was this?
Interesting to see that the distance betwen the cameras is different with the 2 lenses.

Are they trying to catch some type of "finish line" event?

I have no idea but it looks pretty cool. I'd love to have more information about it if anyone finds it.

Looks like they're steroscropic camera setups. Look at how the lenses for each pair of cameras are angled in. I'd guess that the calculater looking things are rangerfinders controlling the toe-in of each lens pair? The black box between the bodies definitly appears to be a shutter-release sync thing.

Interesting setup - definitely for 3D I'd say.

I cannot see any "toe in" mechanism (other than a gross mechanical one with screws).
I can only see what looks like a screw head with a washer on it. This screw looks to go directly through that rigid bar that seperates the two cameras, directly into the lens ring collars.
So the "mystery boxes" with the keypads are most likely serving some other function (than "toe in").
Enjoy! Lon

Maybe the guy took the 'have a backup camera' too seriously? :D

maybe one starts its frame burst a fraction of a second later so that they are getting slightly different shots.
One of the camera's WOULD get the shot
????????????????

Hmmm. A pair of 8.5fps 1D bodies set up to fire "dueling banjos" style for a combined 17fps would be pretty sweet.
Add one more and you can make 24.5fps movies.

my guess is there are remote cameras for capturing from a distance... i dunno but i'd love one whatever it is :D

Expensive. Beyond that I have no clue. Would really like to know though. I love a good mystery.

Could it be something for capturing a wire-frame (or used to make one) to be rendered for a video game? Maybe they take the pictures, then kinda map out the body.
Otherwise maybe it's a Finish Line camera setup. If they are controlled correctly, you could get 34fps, with some spectacular IQ as opposed to video, where the IQ just wouldn't be as sharp...
Really intesting, whatever it is...

Do I see a pair of L lens hooked up to a flux capacitor? Imagine the possibilities!

Could you post a 100% crop of one of those 'calculator' things? Maybe we can find some more out...

I don't know about X-games, but in auto racing you have a in-car box that records lap times and it's possible that those "calculators" are tied into that system so that they automaticly fire when someone passes the finish line.
My best guess.

the boxes are flashwizards. Didn't recall seeing any flashes at this particular event since it was still daytime. Maybe for the night events.

You can use fill flash for day time. Actually is useful for shots where you have people jumping every which way in skateboard and biking.

good point, i recall one guy, all his job was was to tail the photographer w/ this big'o flash plate on a stick (imagine a giant flashing lollipop) looking thing about 2 feet across.

Maybe they were trying out the lens's to see if they have a good copy. they might be pointed at a brick wall 1/2 mile away;-)
