saravrose

Sorry to be soo late everybody I had to drive down to the valley and back up again today... This weeks theme is twenty minutes from home... which is exactly as it sounds.. So, either walking, driving riding a bike... everybody travel about twenty minutes from your front door and take some shots... The rules are all the same photos can be taken from sunrise on friday through sunset on sunday and posted by monday.... Two shots is the forum limit... Have a great time can't wait to see what we all come up with...

happy shooting.

sari.

About 20 minutes from my door is the Molonglo River which is a part of the local wetlands area. When the weather gets a bit warmer I will take a tour on this river to explore the birdlife which, funnily enough, nests on the opposite bank to the walking tracks!

Today I was there at dawn - zero degrees celcius (32 degrees F) and was waiting for sunrise. I took these shots (amongst many others). You can see the mist still on the water in one of them.

The pictures fit the width guidelines for here but are a bit large for anyone on dialup so I will post links.

Kiwibloke..great shots and well done.

It was such a beautiful afternoon, I packed my 20D, monopod, and a few lenses into my trusty Crumpler backpack and took off. I stopped walking after precisely 20 minutes and ended up at the entrance to Woolcock Park, at Red Hill.

Caught this guy after cropping out the surrounding clutter....

I waited a few minutes for the setting sun to catch this beautiful Tibouchina 'Alstonville' that was in flower just to my left (I had to walk two paces to get it into focus) ;)...

I had to go for some grocery shopping and took my camera with and decided to just walk 20 minutes in the diretion of the grocery store and see where I ended up.

And guess what. I ended up at the graveyard

Last week I had decided to use my 20D with my 28 f/1.8 instead of my 1D mk IIN. Since I didn't get any shots last weekend so I used the 20D today.

Not that great a shot on a very overcast day, but the best I could manage. C&C and suggestions on how to make it better are welcome.. I can't think of anything at the moment, but I'm sure there is something.

No rain as predicted but very thick fog. Tomorrow is suppose to be sunny:D

Kiwi - What gorgeous light you caught in a very pretty setting. Looks like spring is on the way for you.

Meaty0 - Colors are vivid in both pictures nice catch of the action in #1.

Tommy - Beautiful old growth and well maintained landscape. The patina on the monument is perfect.

Lightstream - I'm not much help in giving technical pointers, but; I think you caught a very dramatic scene, I like how the clouds are breaking just a tad over the skyline.

it's raining here. i'll wait till tomorrow. if it's still raining, i will get out my umbrella.

kiwi- i like the mood of the pictures. serene.

meaty0- i like the frozen ball. nice purple flower.

tommy- i love the landscapes. the pathway is congruent and talks to me.

lightstream- i would've moved the camera to the right a bit putting the black building on the edge. would've waited a few seconds/minutes? it looks like some blue is breaking out of the sky on the upper left part of the picture.

hi becky.

Kiwi: Wonderful land/water scapes. I love no.2
MeatyO: Fun no. 1 and beautiful purple pansy (?)
Tommy: Since joining this forum I have discovered an interest in graveyards. Both photo's are great, no. 2 pulls me a bit more.
Lightstream: I agree with Becky, very dramatic and almost a bit otherworldly.

I have hubby scoping the area for me to determine my 20 minute venture. As soon as the fog lifts I'm off!

I'll join this game... I thought I could make it to the fountain on Los Feliz, just outside Griffith Park, that's in William Mulholland's memory. There's also a statue of Griffith Jenkins Griffith, who donated the land now known as Griffith Park to the city of Los Angeles, at that corner. I planned for those to be my two shots, but apparently a traffic light just wasn't timed right and and delayed me enough so I didn't quite make it there when my 20 minutes were up. Another 30 seconds and I would have made it... So, my pictures are from just inside Griffith Park:

http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wwpd24-01.jpg

http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wwpd24-02.jpg

After taking the pictures, I packed up my gear and started heading back home. About five minutes later I passed a single vehicle accident involving a black Thunderbird. I couldn't figure out just what the car hit in the first place, but he must have been really moving because it split the car in half right behind the front seats. The front end of the Thunderbird slammed into a parked car and the rear end of it was about a quarter of a block away, on the sidewalk, up against a fence. There were cops all over the place! I wonder if the T-bird was running from the police when it happened.

Okay. Since I spent close to nine hours underneath a mobile home (actually, two classrooms at an elementary school) replacing duct work.... I am taking
HUGE
liberties with this weeks theme.... So this is me, twenty minutes before I took a shower! :) And I'm actually relatively clean in this shot 'cause I had the morning shift in the mud, so by the time I came home, most of the mud had caked up, dried and fallen off. (And please excuse the mess behind me)

Kiwi: Beatuiful captures! The first one has gorgeous colors. The second is incredibly serene! Makes me want to go there. :)

MeatyO: He has great 'follow-through' :)
I love the lighting on your flowers. I'm glad you waited for it. ;) The shadow of the stamen (?) is fabulous.

Tommy: I love your graveyard shots. Both are great, but that second one is GREAT. Wow.

Lightstream: Great urban setting. Love the angles of the buildings. Well done. :)

Lonnie: Too bad you didnt get all the way to where you were headed, but I like the results of it. That little building is very quaint, and the flowers are really pretty.
I'm glad you weren't in the accident.

Beth: Hee heee! I love it! Sounds like you had a FUN fun day. :) :)

And my contribution:
I knew where I wanted to go, and I knew it would be stretching it. But Gunlock Falls is about 20 minutes from my house, and it is gorgeous, I wanted to share.

Sooo..... 16 minutes by truck (slightly over the speed limit ;) ) and a 4 minute hike (broke into a bit of a sweat trying to turn a 6-7 minute hike into 4 minutes, but I DID IT) get to the falls.....and THEY ARE DRY!!! Guess it's been a while since I've been there in August.

Oh well. It is still a beautiful area, and I got some good shots, even if they aren't of the falls. LOL.

#1: When I got the falls, and realized they were dry (I had a sneaking suspicion anyway, because I couldn't hear the water) I was bummed. But I turned around and saw these beauties. Prickly Pears. MMmmmm.

and #2: The pond, which is normally churning pretty rapidly because of the waterfall that feeds it, was stagnant, offering a nice reflection of the red rocks and the beautiful blue sky.

Ugh!! Cleaning out closests and dressers *IS* a rough day!! I'd rather roll in the mud.

Cat.. I like that shot of the prickly pear. When I was visiting my folks in Tucson, the birds were just starting to discover the ripe fruit and I wanted to catch a bird with it's head stuck down in one of them... didn't happen, but it was fun to watch.

No, I didn't get any pictures of the accident scene. With all the police activity going on there I figured it was probably best to just keep moving along. If I'd had my 100-400 lens with me I might have stopped and fired off a few from a discreet distance, but I wasn't expecting to need that kind of reach, so I didn't bring it with me. That'll teach me...

Becky N

Cat - So that is what a Prickly Pear looks like, cool colors, why do Baloo and the Bear Necessecities keepin going through my mind?:D

Very nice reflections in the pool, when you said stagnant I was expecting green slime, this is very pretty and tranquil.

Now when you pick a pawpaw
Or a prickly pear
And you prick a raw paw
Next time beware
Don't pick the prickly pear by the paw
When you pick a pear
Try to use the claw :) :) :)

And there was green and slimey in the pond, you can see a bit on the bottom...

What was it about today? My closets, my linen closet, washed all the linens. . . just clean, clean, clean! I hardly sat down. Reminds me of the "nesting" I always did before going into labor! lol
Working in the mud is more my pleasure.

Hey Cat. We have Prickly Pear here in Australia as well, but it's considered a noxious weed. It flourishes none-the-less and I love the fruit, but it's hard to skin it without getting "prickled". :-D

Well, I drove as far to the end of the road figuring it would take me about 20 minutes to get there. Well, it ended up only taking about 15 minutes. So I grabed my gear and my tripod and walked down the beach five minutes for a total of 20 minutes. I was hoping to stop a beach that I love, but needed to continue walking to get the 20 minutes in. Set up on a rocky point instead.

I took a bunch of different sunset shots and played with the sutter speed and exposure to try and get the "smoothed out" effect on the water/waves and bring out the colors in the sky.

1)Here is one where I steped the exposure down a few stops to try and bring out the color in the sky since I DONT have any filters yet....LOL
http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/89309814-L.jpg

2)In this one I slowed my shutter speed to "smooth out" the water....first real try at these....
http://superdiver.smugmug.com/photos/89310099-L.jpg

I ran out of battery QUICK. I shot two soccer games today with one battery. Tonight I had two fully charged ones and ran out in less then 30 minutes using long exposure times and slow shutter speeds....LOL...I am going to order more batteries....

That's a great barn, Sari. Plenty of character there! (I can't tell the 2nd one is crooked either, to be honest).

... and you learn something every day. I didn't know you could eat prickly pear!

Well, I live on the outskirts of town, so a 20 minute walk for me is either into town or out into farmland. I chose the latter :D

Good suggestion on the waiting bit. Unfortunately I had to head off to another appointment and around 20 minutes of driving later, the sun did break through the clouds as it was setting, and the golden rays were just magnificent. Dang.. guess you can't win 'em all. Either that, or it gives me an incentive to go back and try again!

I said I shot thousands of photos - I didn't say what of :o

The main reason I shoot so many is that I'm trigger happy. If theres a sunset and I can watch the whole thing, I'll end up shooting a whole memory card of shots...Its not that they are necessarily bad, theres just loads of them that are the same...

When I used to work freelance I had a regular client in Birmingham and so I often used to travel up from home in Bath and walk past this huge wooden and tarp. clad 'box' en route from New Street Station to my regular hotel.

I had no idea then what great building was hidden away inside and it was only when I moved here to live last year that I discovered it was the Town Hall (http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/townhall.bcc), so I was very curious to see what it was like.

I checked on the web and found some old shots, and that was interesting, but then finally last week the 'covers' started to come off the extensive renovations that have been going on for the last six years or so.

So, with my original drive somewhere idea out of the window, as I couldn't pick up the new lens I'd intended to use, I thought I'd head down to the city and see what I'd been missing given it is a 20 minutes give or take walk from my place. It is a very imposing, neo-classical building and it made my heart skip a beat, if only a little, when I saw it.

It was opened in 1834 as 'the finest Music Hall in the country', and is now Grade 1 listed. It was designed by one Joseph Aloysius Hansom for 'the performance of music, political speechmaking, public gatherings and the use of the urban community'. It's planned reopening is set for late 2007 following the £35 million renovations. A statue of Queen Victoria stands foreground.

SuperD - The sunsets are gorgeous, nice rocky point and BG. The smoothing effect gives surreal composition, almost like a painting.

Leland - That door conjurs up thoughts of Alice in Wonderland did you got through it? Interesting basket of old stuff in #2.

Sari - Very interesting old barn, can't wait to see other shots when you jump the fence. #2 love the golden glow, even if it means fall is on the way.

Matt - Nice Angus shots.

Condyk - I'm betting this isn't going to be the last picture we see of this magnicent building. I'm thinking when you can get up close there will be some nice architechtural features to shoot.

Sunny here today. There is a fly-in a the local airport, unfortuantely it is longer than a 20 minute walk and much shorter than a 20 minute drive, even at a very slow speed. But I think I'm going to head south, literally, and see where the road takes me in 20 minutes. I'm hoping for a nice agricultural scene. See you later.

Yup, I think so ... not much of a shot and you can't really see the detail from the full sized shot in this ultra-small version, but should be plenty to shoot around this area once the building is completed. The columns and most of the other details all have fine mesh coverings to keep the Pigeons from perching.

I like this weeks theme and everyone's shots. The semi-random ones always seem more interesting to me. We get to see bits of people's world rather than something that could be shot pretty much anywhere.

OK

Having decided to use my Nikon 135 2.8, as I've been using the 70-300 instead of it recently, and I still love its bokeh (you can't get that on the 70-300 at f/5), I was stuck with that focal length, something I really regretted later (after I'd walked further into town than my 20 minute spot and I was attempting to show the height of stilt walkers...)

anyway....

I walked as fast as I could, and got so close to the street performers and show promoters on the Royal Mile (an old road between the castle and the palace) that there was a few people wandering around dressed up...

Heres some people dressed as firemen, giving out leaflets for a show.

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/4412/0820152448vh8.jpg

I'd planned to reshoot today but haven't been up to getting out. I'll post a yucky one from yesterday and hope there's no rain later in case I get energetic.
Yesterday was rainy and I was feeling "tortugal" (not that that is a recognized word but it does describe my pace)- I didn't make it quite as far as I'd hoped in my twenty minutes. Ended up outside the wedding shop when the sun broke out- been there done that but here is a crop from one of the shots I took. reflection of course,;it is highly oof since I was focusing on the manequin. Leo - Checked out your link, looks like an interesting festive for people watching and shooting. I like your street shot as well. Funny how several of us took pictures of the street/road...in a moment you will see I followed suite.

Wu - I like the reflection and I really like how it plays in the full image. So many interpretations could be made, the first thing in my head was "Runaway Bride" like she might be having second thoughts.:)

Curtis N and I hopped in the car after going to the fly-in and headed almost straight south for 20 minutes, turning only when there was no other choice. First picture shows why you don't get a lot of landscape shots from me. This is the landscape in the middle of the corn belt. Actually there are often soy beans on the other side of the road, but not here. The two towers on the horizion to the right of the road is the Byron Nuclear Plant's cooling stacks:

I think it is best in the full one, as well. And you are right as to interpretation. Have you seen the other bride shots? here's one "Coming Storm Redux": http://static.flickr.com/59/160926098_288c8f6f7b_b.jpg
I tend to like the darker ones, but this one has been more popular with others.

hmmm just thinking. . . wonder what these shots is indicating to others about the "artist" lol

You know, Illinois doesn't look much different from kansas. :) We have a nuke plant about an hour from here but it is domed-- no lovely smokestacks. The glow of the lights on a cloudy predawn is pretty awesome.

Becky - Great shots. It does seem like roads are a topic of choice - perhaps its because most people will be on a road when their time runs out :D

Wu - I like that shot a lot - the birds flying past the sun look great, although I guess its unfortunate you where focussing on something else at the time. However, part of me still likes it, the halos around the birds are great!

Misspix - I especially like the second one - theres not many flowers left around here :( - no rain until this week over almost the whole summer

Hi BeckyN

I like your shots. I have two questions about the first picture.

Have the local authorities dumped yellow gravel on top of an ashphalt road? :-O If not, what's the black stuff in the middle of the road?

The sky has a greenish hue to it on my monitor. Is that the natural colour of the sky or is that just my monitor?

Another great response to a very interesting challange.
there are too many postings to comment on each one but they are all well done.
Yesterday was a great day but had a bunch of things to do and the forcast looked good, so waking up this morning to the sound of a torrential downpour made me wonder if I was going to get any shots at all.
Managed to keep the camera dry and got the following.

Twenty minutes took me to the edge of Old Montreal and managed to get a shot of the Montreal Skyline through the fog and rain.

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b313/SRT101/MtlinFog.jpg

Took this shot of one of Montreal's landmarks. The Five Roses Flour sign which is visible when driving into the city from the South Shore. The company has been sold to a competitor and they are supposed to remove the sign.

It is common practice here on the the rural roads to hot tar and gravel them periodically. It would appear this one has been done within the last few months.

I'm not seing the green hue. I was using a CP for these shots if that would have any affect.

wow! A lot of excellent shots. I need to post another reply for my comments. Very inspiring WWPD!

So..., I made it to the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame. I did not get stranded in the highway. whew! I made it with 2 minutes to spare. Luckily there were parking spaces on the street. So many things were happening this evening, there were skateboarders, people hanging out, wedding pictures. I seem to want to highlight my city so I went with the landscapes. I did get some nice stop motion shots of the skateboarders... but 2 is the limit.. ;)

Somehow, I am having a difficult time resizing my pics. Too small. Help!

I don't like PP but I have to eliminate the dust in my sensor and a little bit of sharpening and cropping.

You should go for a return visit and contact me! The lakefront is always fresh to me. I never tire of taking pictures there. It seems that I always get a new perspective.

I am still unsatisfied with my post though. I can't seem to make it sharp with my kit lens. I mean it is focused but was not sure if the shots were tripod'd or not. I keep alternating between handheld and tripod. I envy the other posts here with very sharp landscapes.

really cool shots this week.. I feel like i'm behind.. but next week isn't going to be quite as hectic.. I clocked in 68 hours this week.. Not bad for a brand new job... and the paycheck is going to be really nice.. But, I can't quite remember feeling this tired.. There are muscles I didn't know existed hurting.. and my feet keep quitting a couple of hours before they should.. makes for a very slow end of the night.. But, i'm about to move out of the restaurant and upstairs into my bar.. thank goodness! no more waking up in the early, early morning... and I'll have some time to get the camera out and go shooting... I literally haven't been off of work during daylight hours since I got up here.. (with the exception of friday).. anyway, hopefully more shots from me later in the week.. there's the lake and the little town and the mountains and go through the canyon and all of the barns, and I want to get some shots of the characters that I work with.. and I want to shoot my roomate.. etc..

Don't fret Becky.

Too late, I fretted:D . Curt and I went back and looked at all the settings from the camera to PP. My white balance was set on cloudy day, usually a tried and true setting for outside, but yesterday, obviously there weren't many clouds. So WB was adjusted in Raw Shooter. Then, unbeknowgst to me, Raw Shooter defaults the tint on all my pictures to -10, so I reset that to 0. I've reposted, page 4, if you want to go back and look.

Long story short, I'm glad I fretted, or Curt would not have pointed out that tint default to me.

This week's theme gave a good turn out. Lots of posts and some newcomers -- welcome! In fact, there are too many posts to comment on individually, although, Condyk, I would like to know which lens you used in your wide shot of Town Hall (I like its results). Each post is interesting, especially because of the variety. So many things to see and do.

Here are my two. I took this one Friday evening. I went for a 20 minute drive that put me in a small town. And I do mean small, just a cross roads, really. Well, the town's volunteer fire department was holding its annual carnival as a fund raiser, so I stolled through it. I found this game in progress. As you can see, the players are pretty serious.

On Sunday I took a walk to a little park just down the road from my home. I knew they were having a car rally of sorts, and I wanted to see what goes on there. Turns out it was a rally of race cars like this one. I felt sorry for its owner because I knew that soon that spotless car was going to take a few spins on the dusty dirt track behind it.

24-105mm 4.0 IS L and that was a crop. It's a plenty wide enough lens if you stand well back. The only problem is when you want wide and close, but I use my 15-30mm EX for those shots. Rare I want wider. Both shots are from the same image but just with different crops. Perspective distortion and mild levelling, with some curves adjustment, in CS2 was needed to straighten things up. Otherwise, as shot.

Lots and lots of diversity in the shots this week and once again there are just far too many in which to comment. I wanted badly to get out this weekend and do some shooting, but with the exception of my 2 hour trip to Columbia, SC on Friday for work, of which I could not take my camera, I never ventured 20 minutes from the house at all. My farthest trip was to the in-laws, about 15 minutes, and I only took a few snaps of my daughter while trying to keep up with her running around playing.

That said I think this was a fabulous theme and that we should maybe revisit it at a later time.

True. At the time I thought I was going to be able to get out and shoot on Sunday, but then on Sunday I did some yard-work and helped my neighbor build a swing-set. I enjoy WWPD more when the shots I take are truly for the theme rather than just using some pics taken that day. So what about "An Interesting Window". It could be a bank of reflective glass ones on the side of a modern building or one of those stained glass jobbies inside a church/cathedral, or maybe just a nice little house window...but the window should be the subject, not the view :-D

Well, I imagine you can figure windows are just fine for me. :D
I will try to come up with something different.

Windows it is! as opposed to mac os x?? heheh ... let's hope we don't have to "reboot" this wwpd topic often. is it Windows 'XP'? ... Xtra Pano? or Windows 98?... 98inch width? no pun! i swear!
CurtisN: great pics on your 20 minute travel. That moth picture is actually posted. it's fun to see members in action being caught by another member! maybe that should be a future WWPD. I won't be participating as I have not discovered any potn member in my area. i'm sure they are here somewhere...

Hehehe...Hmmm...Yeah, we could have a WWPD with "Take a photo of a photographer" as the theme :-) That would be fun as part of a "scavenger hunt" challenge. Perhaps Sari will come up with some more "off the cuff" ideas for another scavenger hunt soon? How 'bout it Sari?

Oh yeah....Hordes of POTN members crashing weddings and sports events, trying to capture the elusive photographer. We would make the news.

That sounds like a lot of fun, though I fear I could wander around Kingaroy all weekend and not see anyone with a camera. Might have to drive down to Brisvegas and follow you around :)

On a long holiday weekend we should have another scavenger hunt...another fun idea would be to all have us take a picture at the same time...not the same hour (say 12 noon everywhere), but actually the same time...

But I like the window idea for this weekend...
