I recently bought a Vivitar flash for the EOS system to use with my G3. I made my choice based on the fact that it was the cheapest model with bounce and swivel head (around $75), and after checking the output voltage to be compatible (under 6V).

However, to my surprise (although it's my fault for not better documenting before) the flash was only detected by the camera and fired, but without TTL metering. This surprised me because I expected the camera to support the EOS system... my friend's 10D works beautifully with the Vivitar.

Anyway, manual exposure is really easy to judge since you put in a exposure time of 1/60 - 1/250 (it doesn't really matter as long as it's indoors) and set an aperture depending on the subject distance, and the results (especially using bounce flash) are superb. My only gripe is that I'm missing out the great AF assist from the flash... the 10D focuses acurately in complete darkness instantly (without a very expensive lens too).

So does anybody know of a way for me to be able to manually trigger the AF assist lamp (through the mounting shoe pins preferably)? It would be nice let's say to push a button while pre-focusing and then to take the shot. The G3's AF assist lamp doesn't do a great job.

Flash AF assist light would be useless for G3 even if you make it work. It was designed for SLR cameras that use different patterns to focus on.
