I have always owned Nikons.
I'm looking to finally jump into the digital market. A guy said I should seriously think about the D30 because of the cmos technology. I was thinking about getting it, then realized two things, I just missed a big incentive promotion, AND they might be coming out with a new and improved D60.
What do I do?
How good IS the D30. I'm a pro, and am used to shooting 645 chromes on a Contax 645 and having them drum scanned. I'm used to seeing 70mb digital files that have mind-blowing detail, sharpness and a dynamic range of 4.7 to 5.0.

Will the price of the D30 come down even more after the D60 is released? When will the D60 be released? Will any possible problems associated with the cmos technology be fixed ?

Sorry, I am not trying to offend you but one thing I can say, D30 will give you better skin tone or compute better exposure than the image you have posted here.

Your not going to get the detail of your Contax with a D30. It is only a very good 3 MP camera that produces excellant skin tone colors, which is great for portraits. All of the rumors suggest that Canon will anounce the camera that will replace the D30 at the PMA in Florida ( Feb 24-27 ). It will probably take several months before the D60 ( or what ever they call it ) will be in full production. The speculation was that Canon was trying to get rid of all it's D30 by using the promotion that offered a free powerpac and 1 Gig microdrive, but that ended in January. The D30 will probably continue to go down in price once the D60 is released. So if your looking for a good portrait camera to get starting in the all digital world the D30 is a good camera. But if you have the money to spend I would wait a few months to see what camera's come out at the PMA. Nikon, Fuji, Sigma and Canon are all releasing new models.

Hello, this image below is a D30 shot straight out of the camera and blown up to this 30x45" as well as having gone to 1228megs at 60x80" @300dpi with amzing results using my own PS actions, but to truly get full detail of a 645 you would need closer to 5.5 mp each being the same quality as the D30 currently which means a 1D is close the d1x is not really as it has les resolution in one axis then a D30 and smaller pixels acroos in the other, My tests have shown the D1x to show pixelation at very large sizes prior to the same blow up form some D30's

Thanks everyone for your responses. Right after this original post, I found out about the new technology by foveon, which people tell me is the equivalent of a porsche compared to a VW Jetta. I will wait and see....
